Valve Cover gasket for '86 VF500F

So apparently, BikeBandit feels that the valve cover gasket for a VF500C (magna) will work just fine for a VF500F (interceptor). They are saying some crap that the OE part has been disconntinued by Honda, and some modification to the Magna gasket may be required to work on the VF500F. Sure. Like to see someone fabricate just the right rubber compound and adhere it to the Magna gasket to cover those exposed cam shaft ends.

So. Anyone here have a solution? I can always just run it as a total loss lubrication system....like the good old days. That ought to be fun. The cagers and environmentalists would love that.

    Thanks.

Ronnie's claims that this valve cover gasket is discontinued too.
Surely, people have to still replace that gasket everyonce in a while. I know it is not necessary every time you adjust the valves, but someone has to have a replacement. Even non stock.
Anyone have ideas? Too much to use liquid gasket, I would think.

Well, how 'bout that! Do you know what modification was required for the magna gasket? Maybe it's just trimming off a tab or something similar. I know that dealers are a bad word to some, but have you asked a dealer in your area what their opinion might be?

Actually just the opposite. I need a tab, 8 to be exact. They cover the cam shaft ends. The area to cover, i think, is to large to incorporate liquid gasket with the magna gasket. about the size of a nickel.

On the old nighthawks they had the "half moons" you're looking for. See the picture. You'd have to check the size of course, but it's an option. I believe in the picture they're labeled #10.

Yea, sort of. My half moons are part of the actual gasket material, and not an insert. See BikeBandit schematic for '85 VF500F. They dont even list '86. thanks for going to the trouble though.

I misunderstood. I thought you had access to gaskets without tabs and were looking for tabs. Good luck in your searching.

no no no. i guess i am miscommuniciating. i need gaskets with the half moons as part of the gasket material. all that i can find is Magna type gaskets or VF700 type gaskets. Basically, I need the OE gasket for '84 - '86 VF500F. thanks. a bit frustrating to try to figure out why Honda would discontinue a part for a vehicle that is only 22 yr old.

The Magna parts should be exactly the same. Have you tried Cometic or Parts Unlimited?

To answer one of your other questions: no, these aren't replaced unless they get damaged. I've reused them multiple times on engines without any problems.

Why do you think the gaskets need to be changed?

Yes, they need to be replaced. they are shredded. The PO damaged them and tried to repair with liquid gasket. I stress tried. Yes, they should last a long long time, between valve adjustments. I already ordered the gaskets. When they showed up, they did not look like the ones I took off. Both BikeBandit and local honda dealer say they are the same.
They dont look like it to me. Am i losing my mind? Now, my bike is a '86, but would use the same gasket as a '85.

Here you go. I can't say the the 84, 85 gaskets will work on the 86 though. Maybe someone here knows.

If the link doesn't work search Ebay for VF 500 gasket.

DUUUUUUDE! Thanks a bunch! Yes, they will work. I bought two of them. I looked in ebay a lot, but did not think of looking with a space between vf & 500.

Ok. Ok. I will stop whining now.
