Please help bike shuts off
Hello, I'm new to this forum but I just got some problems with my bike and don't know where to start.
I have a 84 vf700 interceptor, today when i went out for a ride it lost power after 3 minutes of riding and the taillight light came one kind of blinking. After i put it in neutral the neutral light was blinking too. RPMs were about 1000 and would not go higher but the tachometer was showing 4-5k. I turned the bike off and it would not turn back on at all, light wouldn't come up either when i turn the key on. After about 3 minutes everything went to normal and bike run good for another 3-5 min then it started again. Can anybody please help me, bike run good last night when I took it for a two hour ride, didn't have any problems. ![]() |

I'd check the plug going to the R/R. It will get hot and lose the connection. These are classic signs.

Yep RR. Reason you can restart is the battery will recharge it's self a bit, but it won't last long.

regulator/rectifier. on a 5th gen (1998) it looks like the dohicky with the chrome computer fan zip tied to it in my photo. looks like a heat sink about the size of a 3x5 card. Check the wires and plugs running to and from it. A multimeter helps out a lot if you need to test different parts on your electrical system. they run about 15 bucks.

On your bike, it should be under the left side plastic cover under your seat. The connector to the stator is not really designed to handle the current the stator is putting out if the connections are not 100% perfect. One of the common fixes is to remove the connector completely and solder the wires together.
Before you break out the soldering iron, use your manual and check the RR and stator with a multimeter.

Lose or fried connections.
I recently replaced the staor and R/R...new connections, plugs, wiring, eqpm. etc, etc, etc... After about a week i experienced similar problems. Come to find out after a thorough check, to the positive connection from R/R was loose and the contact point was the weak link. It wasnt feeding the starter solenoid and battery as it should because of loose connection. Battery Voltage was good, the bike would run weak and just cut out after getting warm and going over a bump or two in the road. Cutting out with normal operating voltage (14.8v) is probably a sign of a bad connection somewhere along the charging section of the wiring harness. in my experience anyway... -S

Trun your multimeter to the 20 volt setting. Now with the bike running, in neutral, rev the engine to 4-5000 rpms and hold it there and see what your meter displays. You may need another person to hold the meter tot the battery while you do this.
It should be around 14.4 volts or so. BZ

so I have checked the voltage on the battery and it was 14V did it for like min at 4000 rpms but then after i shut it off it went dead again for like 3 min. The R/R has two connectors, one with three wires (coming out of alternator, or what ever you call it on the bike) and another one with five, can I check that some how?

You can check it using a multimeter; it's a measuring tool that checks voltages (and resistance etc).
This one is pretty good, I picked it up when it went on sale for $10 in the store: http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_1...00100600&aff=Y |

You might also try these fault finding charts since you know how to use a multimeter. These charts are really helpful. Im using them to troubleshoot some charging issues on my bike.
