    Step One was easy.

OK, after 10 mins and one beer I had the rectifier/regulator changed on my 1999 VFR. Mello Dude recommended that I also order a VFRness. When I pulled the RR off the bike, the plug with all the yellow wires going into it showed signs of overheating. So needless to say I'm ordering a VFRness from Wire My Bike. No, I don't have a manual for the bike so I'm ordering that too. My questions are; Will it hurt my bike to run it with the old harness until I get the VFRness? Should I attempt to replace the VFRness before I get a manual? And finally, Is the VFRness replacement a one beer job or should I break out the cooler?

Service manuals are available here somewhere I downloaded one.
The VFRness is an easy install. It doesn't replace your stock harness just compliments it.
Be sure to use some terminal grease on the connections.
