how do you tell? I have mine hanging on the wall. Mine is a 98 and the pipe is not rusted but has hardly ever been touched so I haven't looked at it close enough to know which it is...

The 98 model does not come with a stainless header, mine was all rusty so I replaced it with the stainless motad setup.

My '01 has original exhaust header and it's not stainless. Not very rusty, but not stainless steel. The muffler is stainless however.

Does a magnet stick to it? If it does, it's not stainless.

if it is not rusty or damaged you are good with what you have. All aftermarket headers for a 98 model flow the same volume as stock(no power gain). People buy the 98 stock headers because they dont have the catilitic converter or O2 ports therefore being a benifit to later models. The only benifit to getting an aftermarket SS header is that it wont rust and they look great.

I guess header replacement may be necessary for a 99 vfr with high miles.. around 75k miles?

Only need to replace it if it's in bad shape and rusted out.

And yeah, I was wrong, all 5th gens have steel header systems, no stainless until the 6th gens.

Although I do have the Tbros ss system on my '99.

I have 77k on my '01 and I have a small leak somewhere around the collector/cat area. Not too bad for now. It's probably been that way for a while. I'm going with the stainless replacement cause it looks better. I don't know if losing the cat gets you all that much and the Fi system works better with the O2 sensors installed.
Time to go pay the bills
