Bulb, need to find model of "pilot"? bulb.

Trying to find out what bulb is used as the "pilot bulbs" under the lo beam bulbs down in the very bottom front clear plastic headlight assembly. I don't have them on my U.S. model (2002) but I heard that they are madatory in Europe / U.K. I have the indentations in the plastic mold where they would have been put in if the bike wasn't designated for the U.S. I would like to add them for visibility purposes but don't know what model of bulb is used.

Does anyone know what they are called or anything about them?

I would like to see this too.
Looks like the perfect spot to add a little visibility!
    Thanx.

    Pilot bulb....model info??

On the sixth generation VFR's there are two Hi-beam bulbs (H7) at the top, two lo-beam bulbs (H4 only using one of the two filaments) below the hi-beams, and then there is a design for two small and low wattage bulbs below the lo-beams. If you are looking at the clear plexi-glass cover that houses the entire light bulb section, and look at the very bottom center area (most forward portion of the nose) there are two small (appr. 1 inch diameter) circles in the plexi-glass that have distorting lines in them. This is where these "pilot?" bulbs would illuminate. The lines in the plexi-glass are there to spread the light beam from the pilot bulbs to soften the glow. The black plastic molding behind the bulbs and their reflectors has the appropriate indentations to install the sockets for these pilot bulbs but they are not put in on the U.S. versions. I would like to install them if I could find out what type of bulb and socket is required. I heard that these pilot bulbs are mandatory in all bikes in Europe / U.K. Honda U.S. doesn't know anything about this because they only know about U.S. Honda bikes. Can anyone from Europe help me? I have pics if that would help and anyone would like to see them.

F.Y.I. Ducatti bikes in the U.S. use a pilot bulb.

    Standard position bulb?

What is a standard postion bulb? Is there some kind of part number associated? How do you know this? I typed the name you gave me into the internet and household light bulbs came up. I called the local bulb store and they said they needed more info. I have seen many different 5W automotive bulbs. At least I think I know that they are 5W now since that is what you have told me but I still am not sure which 5W bulb or socket is required to bring the bike lighting up to European standards.

    Need more help please.

    microfiche pic

Can I get that microfiche file? I can't really see the detail in it. Did that come from a European VFR? I tried the link at the bottom end of your post but it only showed me a video clip of a helicopter taking off.

I had these on another Honda, doesnt' add any visibility, it's more of a running light when the headlights/headlamps are in the "off" position.

    Pic of headlight

This is a pic showing where the pilot / parking lamp would go if my bike was a European model VFR.

Once again this site won't let me upload my photo. It is a jpeg photo, 617KB. What is wrong with that? Is something wrong with my photo or the website? Please email me and I will email you, or anybody that will help, the photo.

Here is link to microifiche but it´s for USA model, since there is no parking bulb on the sheme, altough there is a spot under main focus for that lamp.
Do USA models have that openning covered with plug or no openning at all?

    pilot light

Thanks for the pic of your headlight with the "pilot"? light installed. Is that Euro model? I have taken my whole front end / fairings apart and off to work on this. I have six 5mm holes in the back plastic of my headlights. Three holes for left side and three holes for the right side. I think that they are breather holes for the air to expand and contract from the headlights getting hot and the ambient atmospheric pressure changes. Two seem to be for the "Pilot" lights but I don't know what the other four are for? I have found that putting single 5mm super-bright LEDs into each hole adds alot character and noticeability. I think cars will look back in their mirrors at night and know that I am a bike and not just half of a car. If anyone wants pics just email me at shaneangove@hotmail.com. I can't seem to get pics to upload to this site for some reason. I have put quite a bit of time experimenting with this project in an electronics lab, trying different colors, brands, styles, and etc of LEDS. So it should look good when it is done.

I think if we can get a hold of the light holder assembly then we could rig up whatever kinda bulbs (LEDs) we could find and make fit. It would make a clean install.

I dont get it,..... whats the purpose of having these lights on our US bikes ? We dont have the option to turn the headlight off, so i cant see where they will add anything to either visibility or looks.

I do understand the desire to have them, as i have them on my German market mini-cooper. With the headlights off, and these on, they are super cool looking. But not getting it on a bike that you cannot turn off the reg. headlight ???

No need to be all confused there Tori... my want for them is to covert them to bright modulating lights for added visibility (safety). They don't need to be brighter than the headlights just bright enough to make people go "hey, what's that?" To each is their own though.

Okay, now that makes sense. If it modulated that would be a whole different story. Dont get me wrong, i actually like the idea of adding them. Like i said. I love them on my mini. But im able to show them off on the mini. I'll watch the thread and hope to see some finished work.

    Cheers !

    Pilot Lights

I put a $2.00 switch in line with the wire that signals the headlight relay to turn on. So I turn my headlight off fairly often. Mostly when I am warming up the bike. It saves the neighbors from unneeded bright lights in their window, gives the battery a better chance to charge, and you can start your bike on a low battery. I had the later one time and I ended up not being able to ride that day. When the bike is parked I can have the LEDs on by themselves and I can turn them on when I ride. I will stand out in traffic and get attaention as a bike and attention just period. I know you can't turn your headlights off as a stock bike but almost nobody on this site has a stock bike. I did the headlight mod. in about 30 minutes without any wire cutting or permanent mods. Who says you can't turn your headlight off. We own the bikes and we can mod. them as little or as much as we have time for. Try modifying your bike sometime if you haven't already.

GO to a parts store and that sells OEM pars and look up a 2006 Interceptor. that should show you the part and the location. Lights you are describing sound like what is now daytime running lights.

I'm in Australia and have an '05 model; the site for these globes does not have any reflective material behind it, but rather is matt black. Has anyone worked out what to do in this situation; just ignore the reflective area and install them anyway, or come up with some sort of reflective addition...?

Hey Win! How ya doing? Having the back reflective may help in directing the light towards the diffuser part of the clear lens. I think in this case if your going to use it for a running light or a safety thing like myself just putting them in there should work fine.

Looks like that part is just painted silver really. That shouldn't be hard to do if ya wanted.

Do you have a line on the parts? Our parts lists over here don't have them listed.

I read the thread about the LEDs. I have 06 VFR and see the holes in question. Are you pleased with the LEDs you installed? Was it a pain to install them? What did it end up costing you in the end? Where did you get them?
