Witnessed something great today

On the way to work today I saw something that brought a smile to my face...something a bit on the rare side in good ol'Delaware.

Passing the local Wawa a rider leaving on a yellow Ninja 250 wearing a full face helmet, leather jacket, gloves and boots. He did have jeans on but hey, new rider and all the other gear...hell this person gets two serious thumbs up

And today is not going to be a 'cool' day either.

Its so nice to see some logic and reason in a world that has so little of it...

A nice pick me up on a Thursday and wanted to share.

That is a rare sight on one of the little ninjas. I sold my wifes 250 the other day and made sure to ask the guy if he had all his protective gear. He did and he didn't even try to ride it home. He brought a friend with more riding experience to ride it cause he was gonna do low speed stuff till he got used to riding. He was Asian, though, and I think in general they are not as hung up on high HP looking like Ricky Racer as caucs are.

Its hard to know sometimes what motivates people and the desicions they make. This is often something I think about and contemplate, usually when I am sitting on the toliet.

Like what motivates someone like this new rider to gear up and not follow the crowd here in Delaware?

What motivates the hardcore squid to stop squiding and take it to the track and begin to learn real skill?

Or, what motivates the new rider to purchase a machine way over their head and ride it way over their head?

What motivates the seemingly good person, who's nice in all other aspects of life, to purchase a particular brand of motorcycle and when on it put a mean look on their face and put other motorcyclists down?

Or why does the person who looks fast is actually slow and the person who looks slow is quick as hell? (Actually this last one is one of my favorite things about motorcycling. What someone looks like has nothing to do with their skill, pretty cool thing).

Or why does the experianced rider who has skill out the ass, does track days, and has raced, been down, has done it all! Will ride like they are racing on the street or on twisty backroads (Tail of the Dragon claims many of these people all the time) How can there be serious lack of judgement by someone who should know better?

And why don't we ever hear of any top level motorcycle racer (Moto GP, AMA all levels) riding like crazies on the street? (I think we all know the answer but its a good question)

And why in the hell do parents/ grandparents, whoever, co-sign on a loan for their 18 year old kid to purchase nothing less than a liter bike with no mentoring, classes, gear, etc. And the kid can't even afford the payments on the bike or insurance?

So what motivated the gent who bought your 250? We can make some educated guesses, which would probably be close, but I've found unless he tells us we can only speculate. Becasue the answers may be cliched but are more often an varied as the riders themselves.

I pray the 250's serve the gents we've seen well in the foray into the brotherhood of motorcycling.

Question. One thing I never hear you talk about is "experienced" (yes, that is right, experienced riders) people taking the track to the street, or riding like the street is the track. I see it each time I hit the backroads. I saw a double fatality (arrived 3 mins after it happened) last year from two skilled riders pushing it too hard (3 total in the accident) on the street. The street does not forgive as the track does. It does not have swept corners, slide run-off areas, hay bales instead of rocks/trees, and an ambulance sitting 30 seconds away.

It doesn't matter if you have the skills of Valentino Rossi, you cannot tell what is around that blind corner, if there is a little bit of dirt/oil/debris on the road, and you never have the right to take a life other than your own.

I was just curious how come you never talk about the factor of experienced riders pushing it too hard on the street and getting into wrecks, and/or endangering others? I see many of these types of experienced riders (who go to tracks, and have had classes) pushing it way too hard in the wrong area, and I used to ride with some of them, and they would push it in the wrong areas...pass too crazy, ride to fast...etc. All facets of riders should be looked at I think. Just because a person doesn't wear gear (I think it is unwise not to wear at least the basics) doesn't make them a bad rider necessarily. Of course, I break the speed limit, but I ride within reason, and I ride as I don't know what is around the next corner, and knowing that my actions could hurt others.

Good question Stuka, I added it to the questions I posed above.

To answer your query, I'd say in my area its generally the 'lack of skill' people biting the dust. However, a few years ago a very well known local stunter who had very good skill was killed when doing around 119 mph through a notoriously bad intersection. Totally his fault. And he didn't wear gear, from what i know. (His uncle is a fellow Ricer Coach)

Delaware is a small State so many people who come through the MSF class no him or knew of him. He has served as the example of skill will not save you when you ride like a retard (I don't use those words, but you get the point).

Since California is still the number one motorcycling state it appears you folks have a wider range of riders and types to see. Canyon racing does not exist in Delaware.

BZ this seems to be the one thing in DE that doesn't change from slower lower to north of the canal. Since the beginning of June I've seen about 4 people in full gear (family notwithstanding). 2 of them were on the same bike, and not from DE, the other two were BMWs (there's actually a very good chance I saw the same guy twice). It's a shame especially since I'm about 10 minutes from Kneedraggers, which has some of the cheapest gear in the country.

Not that there's many twisties up here to race on, it seems like the crowd around here is more interested in 100 mph wheelies, which I don't really think are any safer.

It's always interesting to watch the different riders and try to figure out what's in their head...although I can't really say it's something I think about on the can.

Kneedraggers is a great store too! Got my Sidi boots from them.

Yeah, not many gear wearing riders in Delaware, and I'm not suprised the people you saw that did have gear are from out of state. If the BMW rider you saw had a bright orange helmet he's another Rider Coach.

You summed it up well too. 100mph plus in a straight line is the game in town. The few twisty back roads I've been on are practically motorcycle free.

Its interesting some of the differences in the riders and how they behave are the same but also different. I am hoping some other CA guys/gals or everyone chimes in with the differences in their areas and what plagues them. Or people shed some light on the questions posed.

As far as deep thoughts on the toliet, well that's were some of my best thinking is done

We see a lot of very dumb people here in NZ when it comes to not gearing up,but because of the extraordinary price of petrol here now $2.12 per litre,a hell of a lot of guys and girls are buying little scooters and the dealers should be shot for not educating them of the consequences of hitting the road with not much more than windbreaker jacket on.
If the road statistics are to be lowered it surely starts with the providers of the machinery to thinks more than getting bums on seats and start to act more responsibly towards their customers

This is an easy one Bubba, Its called salesman, not all but quite a few, you ealk in with a fisfull of money and out with a hyabusa. they dont care. onlycare about making the sale. DISCLAIMER......... not all salespeople are this way just a few that I have personally seen and interacted with . or had friends deal with.


I prefere the slow ride, even on the twisties, I mean I'll have fun, but my fun is at MY pace, so when I do finally catch up with you guys here in cali and we go for a ride, I will be in the last position in the line, maybe I'll rig a camera up so I can get some pictures
