I have been going by the name Heretic since the internet started (yes, I am a a bit of a computer nerd and yes I had a 9600 baud modem with a 10Mhz XT PC!)

I got the name from my favourite Sci Fi novels - the Dune series by Frank Herbert.
One of the books is called "Heretic's of Dune"

I also used/use it for online gaming (doom, Quake, Enemy Territory).

Better - in Computer Science 11LD in High School, we had to use "punch cards" - that was back in 1981.

Ah, you computer newbies annoy me (just kidding, of course) First one I had was a Texas Instruments TI/99-4A, then a Radio Shack Color Computer. I finally went "Big Time" with a CP/M machine. I think that one had a 1 mHz clock in it, and I know it had a 1,200 baud modem (before that I had a 300 baud accoustic coupler that I had to stick the phone handset into) Couldn't do much with the modems, there wasn't much to connect to except Compuserve and they only allowed connections at night.

I also remember when the Dune series was new!

As was said: Ah, the good old days

Hey, if we are talking about the first computer, I can beat you all...I remember when my computer was my fingers! You know, adding and subtracting on my fingers.
WAIT A MINUTE...I STILL do that!!!

I had the commador 64 with tape drive and dual 5.25 floppys. Then the 128 came out. I also had the high tech Timex-Sinclair.

So you know Fortran then. Man you are an old bugga. Of course I just heard about these things. My schooling in Key Punch goes back to when schools rented time on huge computers in some non descriptive building down town. early 70's. Who would have thought. Now you can get, what is is 8 gigs of memory on a chip smaller than the size of you pinkie fingernail. I have one of those in my Ipod. If I fill that sucker up with music, I will die before I get a chance to hear them all.

I have to admit to it being a guilty pleasure of mine too. Something about the Hawaiian vibe and that sexy Ferrari. I still want one of those! Thanks TC!

as this thread goes on, I feel less and less original. on the plus side, though, it makes intros to members face-to-face much smoother...

I almost died because of the show! When I went to the island in the early 80's I decided to take a swim off the beach in Maui, you know just like Magnum did. No life guards and no one on the beach except for my buddy who was with me. I went out and got caught in a rip tide! When I was not able to swim straight back to shore l realized what I was in. I was lucky read somewhere about these on the plane or hotel and what to do and not do. I had to drag my buddy from the swimming hole where they cliff dive on Oahu, so I know he couldnt help me. If I called out for him to get help I knew they wouldn't get there in time and it also would be a sign that I am saying, I cant make it on my own. Well I remembered what I read and started a diagonal swim to shore. I had to use a combination of every stroke I ever learned and some free style along the way. My friend was watching from the shore and was a bit worried because I got so far out. He figured because I was not yelling for help, I must be ok but still kept an eye on me. When I finally made it back to shore I collapsed and thank the good lord my lips were touching sand on the beach and not the bottom of the ocean. He came up and asked "You ok?" I said " I am now!" Lesson learned, Im not Magnum PI and I dont go swimming in the ocean !
