Help! Barely get 20 MPG.

I have owned my 2001 VFR 800 FI for a little over a year down. I have never paid attention on the mpg until the high price of gas currently. I always fill my tank to the very top and get barely 90 miles. Obviously, there is something wrong with it. The bike has only 9k miles on the clock and it runs flawless.

Recently, I have changed oil, oil filter, and air filter (all K&N) and the mileage has not improved. I was told that my bike is running too rich which is very obvious as it is draining my wallet. I am holding off to bring into a dealer to get it fix. I am hoping fellow riders would know something about it and can help me out. Greatly appreciated for any good tips.

Does your VFR have any mods done to it? I get 42-50 mpg on my 99 model riding 2 up ..I would have the fuel mapping checked .

Also have any and all air sensors checked .

I think one important aspect here is what type of riding you do. Is your riding mostly stop and go, like in a city? If so, then your mpg will not be as good as on the highway. On my 93 (carbed not FI), I would get about 100 mpg in the city. It sucked, but then it was stop and go. Now that's just to where my fuel light came on, so I still had some fuel left in the tank, obviously. But I digress....do you accellerate hard or easy from stop lights? How about tire pressure? That can affect mpg as well.

Nailer may also be right, your fuel map may be incorrect. A little more info will help us help you.

Vinny has some good pain meds he's on if he thinks he ever got one hundred (100) miles per gallon in the city. -or- this is a Klassik case toooo many zeros.

I think he means ten (10) mpg.

Sorry, I meant 100 miles per tank. There is no mods on my bike except D&D pipe. My ride is a mix of a little of city riding and highway. A fellow rider has the same commute gets around 40MPG on his 99 VFR.

No, I have not check any oxygen sensor. Is that something I can do alone?

Yeah, sorry. I meant 100 miles per tank. I had a D&D on mine as well. My riding was a mix, but I did spend a lot of time in both settings. When in town, my mpg was poor, on the highway, it was between 40 and 50 mpg.

No drugs this morning, just lack of sleep. lol

I was talking about the mapping in the computer on the bike that controls the flow of fuel to air ratio...Also you may want to have your starter valves checked to make sure they are in sync..

are you sure the automatic choke is not sticking and staying partially engaged? Go to your Honda dealer and buy a " Factory Service Manual" as they are worth every $ you pay for it.. It will tell you how to check the fault codes on your bikes computer and much more.

Gotta be something screwed up somewhere. I used to average 180 miles per tank on my 99 no matter how or where I rode it. You would probably be better off buying or downloading a service manual and trying to diagnose yourself before you take it in to a dealer. You may end up having to get a power commander and remapping it.
