24.000km Service

Hi all. Whilst I was reading a british bike mag recently I came upon a paragraph concerning the 16,000 mile(24,000km ?) service for a Vtec VFR. The journo said that it was an 'engine out' procedure/service(valve adjustment) and that the labour alone cost him 500 pounds !
Have any Aussie riders had this service done and what did it cost ?
Seems like a very expensive service to me if the bike mag is to be believed.

Wow I have read some reviews that predicted the maintenance on the VFR w/VTEC would be more expensive but WTF.

I believe that a fair bit of the labour cost comes from checking the valves. A mechanic at my local Honda dealer told me that they have to remove whatever is above the valves, put in some special tool & then put everything back together. Then they can run the checks on the valves. After that they have to reverse the process so that they can get their tool out from the engine. So they basically have to take the top of the engine off & put it back on twice.

24000km service IS a major one but is NOT an engine out service unless the shop doesn't have the above mentioned tool.

Well a $650 estimate could easily change to $700 - $750 and that is kinda high. I guess the moral here is if you buy a used VTEC VFR make sure it has significantly less than 20k miles or more than 25k (assuming the maint was done at 24k). Bummer - WTF Honda

Well I guess expensive means different things to different people.
I love the VFR. By most standards, It's an expensive bike and has a number of technological complexities that will, without doubt require labour intensive and specialist tools to service. You can't have high-tech engine and mangament systems without paying a premium somewhere......

I've had other bikes that due to roller valve gear required "major" type servicing for every service, excluding oil/filter changes and they cost in the vicinity of $300 a pop.

So considering the first major on the viffer isn't until 24,000km then that works out @ $37au per 1000km. Not too bad in my opinion.

I am based in Sydney and recently had my 24k service on my VTEC. It cost me $630 odd from a small Honda dealer in Beaconsfield. Sydney Shitty Motorcycles in Lane Cove (where I bought it) indicated it would be close to $1,000.

I also spoke with Lloyd Penn over at Atarmon who said that he has been recommending the major service wait until 48k rather than 24k. By chance, I bumped into a bloke with a gold V-Tec not long after I had my bike serviced and he had gone down the Lloyd Penn path and was happy with the bike. He was only in the 30k's though, so still a ways from 48k.

These prices being described seem a bit high to me. I have a local Honda dealer that gave me the set rate cost of $285 plus parts. I gave that info to my mechanic who ended up charging a little more because of the time he put into the job.

I think the current conversion rate is 1 Australian dollar is worth roughly 80 cents U.S.

Thanks for the info guys. So it seems that perhaps anywhere between $650 to $1000 dollars for the 24K service.. Hmmm

I'm the sort of guy that imagines all sorts of disaster if my bike isn't serviced on time and regularly etc. So waiting until the 48K service to get the valves done would be nerve-racking for me

Not having done many klicks on the bike, I guess I'll just have to do some weekenders on it to ' bond ' with it to make the service costs a pleasure rather than a pain

I can see a trip up to Cairns via the NT on the horizon too

They sure are great bikes though. I'm considering buying a pre Vtec VFR as well as a back-up. Love the sound of those cam gears

Anymore info on the cost of the BIG service would be appreciated.
