I highly recommend the variable heat controller. I find I keep mine about 1/2 to 3/4 . With the toggle switch it is not a option.

Here is what I did

I mounted the controller just below the left grip on the black part of the fairing. I considered mounting on the red shelf, but that would mean disconnecting the wires every time I removed the fairing for maintenance. With the left red fairing off, the underneath of that black shelf is exposed and easy to work on. I bought some better red and black 16 gauge copper wire for the run back towards the battery. The wire they sent did not look so good and they were both back and did not want to confuse them. I soldered all the connections up front and wrapped everything with electrical tape. Then I wrapped the new red and black wire together with electrical tape and ran them along the inside of the frame below the tank, using zip ties to hold them to the harness that runs along there already. I put a O-crimp on the negative wire and put it under the screw to the negative side of the battery. I put stuck the positive wire directly under the front side of the dash lamp fuse. (protected side). They work great! The only other thing I would do differently is put in some connectors below the controller, in case I ever have to remove that fairing shelf.

Some more tips.

The best way to get the bar ends off is to turn the screw counter clockwise while holding the bar end from turning. I remember having a little trouble with mine, I think Honda puts a little epoxy in there. But you must stop the bar end from turning while you remove the screw, that is the only way to stop the inner bar weight from turning.

To remove grips; the best way that I know of is to remove your bar ends and wedge a flat head screwdriver between the grip and the handlebar, then take some WD40 with a long spray adapter thing and stick it under the screwdriver as far up between the bar and the grip as possible. Spray a little in there. remove the screw driver and try to twist the grip and pull it off. If it is still stuck repeat the screwdriver / WD40 thing in a different place. The WD40 breaks down the epoxy holding the grips on, and they should slide right off.

I replaced my grips with some cushier off-road grips. The grips come off and back on very easy with compressed air using some 1/4" copper tubing to get the air under the grip.
