yet another tire thread

Ok, so we get polls all the time and discuss tires all the time. Here's an idea (this may have already been done, but I don't care) Let's decide all the factors we need in a tire comparo, decide on a rating scale, then start a sticky thread that we update periodically keeping the VFRworld tire journal. For example, we have price, grip, wear, etc and then we keep an avg based on all the ratings and show how many have rated which tire and then when someone says, hey what's the best tire? we say check out: thistirethread right here.html

what do you guys think? can we get organized enough to pull it off? Who wants to run this little project?

We could do the same thing for oil as well...hahaha....do you think that will make one single person use the "lonely" search function up top though? I think it is a great idea though.

It is hard to rate opinions, as of course, they are subjective from different riders with different skills, ages, some might be biased.....on the other hand, opinion would give us a good point of view/info to go off of.

Well break it down into - "Sport" and then "Sport Touring". The sport are more sticky in the twists, but wear out quicker, and the ST have some stick but higher mileage.

The dark side did a survey of oil brands - number of people using xxxx.

That sounds good, but I have had good luck with two sets of Conti Road Attacks and am now trying out some Pirelli Dibalo Stradas and so far can't complain. I think they are stickier than the Conti's already, which I definitely like.

i've done two sets of metzler z6's no complaints, trying pirelli diablo corsa III's so far they stick like nothing i've tried as of yet, let me put some miles on them.

I think it's a good idea. Just need to determine what aspects we are comparing. And, yes, some things are going to be subjective to a point. Price is not subjective, nor is wear and performace when the type of riding and type of roads are taken into consideration. This one may benefit from looking at a mags tire comparo and see what they did.

One thing I think that would be great is a photographic journal on the tire wear. For example, take a picture at 1,000 mile increments so we can all see how the tire is wearing. That would be ideal for the sport touring tires. On mine I can barely tell the difference between 1,000 and 2,000 miles but once it gets past 4,000 miles I'm starting to see it's wearing out.

Also take into account how the user rides the bike. Do they ride like an old granny or are they looking to take Rossi's position? Do they just use the bike for commuting or weekend romps or both?

This might be a little involved but you may want to even take statistical information like how fast the bike stops from 60 mph to zero and likewise, how fast it goes from 0 to 60 mph but that's getting pretty involved and that's pretty much reserved for magazines that have the budget for fancy measuring devices.

Or ultimately you could do this the lazy way and just combine all the tire threads into one and have it in the VFR Wiki section.

well, I like your suggestions joey, but I dont think any of us will watch the mileage close enough and take the pictures, but if we can come up with a rating system and all agree to it, then we can all put our ratings up for X tire and then on the chart have X number of users rated X tire as 4.5 out of 5 etc and then it would giv eus a pretty good place to point new users and we could keep adding to it as different users tried different tires...

Great Idea! Maybe we need to start simple.

List tyres by brand and type (Sport & Sprt touring) then each of us can add comments in a Pros and Cons area.

Keep it short and sweet. Once we get enough info, then maybe we can streamline the process a bit better.

Ok. I'm gonna say we use 1-10 scale with 10 being the good side... We need at least cost, mileage, grip... what else? How many miles should a rear go to rate a 10 on mileage? a front? Grip is pretty subjective, but for my purpose, my first set of contis I scraped pegs on first day so I'd say at least 9 of 10 for grip. For cost, cheap rates higher so if you say a shinko is $95 and a dunlop is $130 then shinko rates higher there... then at the end of the column, we have the average of all factors... we also have to have a column that says based on X number of ratings... okay so far that give me:

My only issue with ratings is that they can get pretty subjective and sometimes people have a different point of view. With the cost you can just have the user enter what they paid for the tire (rear/front) and for the mileage just have the user enter approximately how long the tire lasted (rear/front) in miles.

Same thing for grip you could even have it ranked according to this:

1 - Feels like I'm on ice
2 - Works as long as the road's dry and there is no particle of sand otherwise all bets are off
3 - Ok with some dirt on the road but for rain, forget about it
...
..
10 - Scraping pegs, no chickenstrips and no sliding

You can have another category, Handling that describes how well the bike turns and navigates sharp corners with the following ranking
1. I'm clumsier than drunks at 2 am
2. I have to pray before corners
..
10. The bike literally reads my mind I am one with my VFR

The geek in me is getting pretty excited about this.

You could even allow the user to determine what is the best tire for them based on a quick poll. I'm a computer programmer so I can spare some coding experience to do that.

The poll could be something like this:

What is most important to you:

1. Hauling a$$
2. Saving money
3. Long distance trip capabilities
4. Winter riding

And when the user selects the answers for the quick poll the program can determine what is the best tire for them. For example, say I want to haul a$$ then the program would return Pirellis because it got the highest ratings in grip.

Or you could skip all this and have charts showing which tires are the best in each category.

Oh one more item you could sample for the tire poll is a "Recommended?" option. Sure, someone may find a tire at a really great price but they would not recommend it due to crappy grip or poor mileage or whatever. You could even take this to another level by having a "Recommend For" option where they can specify exactly what they recommend for:
1. Track days
2. Commuting
3. Twisty riding
4. Cross country trips
5. Wheelies and other stunts
