WTB: aftermarket exhaust, 6th gen
Looking for an aftermarket exhaust for a 6th gen. Slip-on type only, no need for a full system. I'll consider pretty much anything within reason, but would prefer to stray from the "fake-canister" 2Bros systems (although, for the right price, even that is an option).
Minor wear/aesthetic blemishes okay. There was a fellow on here selling a used carbon Remus system for $500, but he never responded. :( I'd like to keep it in the $500 range for used slip-on canisters. If you have something I may be interested in, let me know! I'm in the Atlanta area if you have something local. |

Is it a faux pax to bump my own thread after a while?
Still holding out in case somebody has some pipes for sale! I will also accept gutted stock pipes (for the right price, of course) |

I may if I can find a spare set locally. Gutting them would be no problem, but putting them back together again would. I'm just the worlds worst welder :)

but you don't have to weld at all for some mods. some drill out the ends, others just use the heat shield, wish i had the link on me but some good how to threads....no welding needed.

Aye, I've seen a few different howtos and techniques but I don't recall any of them not requiring any welding. I'll search around some more.
I guess I could also mark some up, cut, gut, and see if I could find somebody handier with a welder than I to put it back together. |

borg's vfr: gutted exhaust and other mods.
some options. One guy said it cost $40 for him to get them welded. another details what he did, no welds.

Thanks for that, Molsan. I may invest in a dremel extension, a bunch of cutting wheels, and a hole-saw and go to town on them tonight and see what happens.
Hell, I guess if I screw it up it's time to buy an aftermarket. :) |

Well -- you've inspired me to just go for it. Tonight I went ahead and yanked the exhaust off, "field stripped" it, and then went to the hardware store for a 1.5" hole saw (2), and some dremel cutting wheels (a million).
I borrowed what must be a 40-year-old (no joke) Craftsman corded drill from my dad since all I have is a battery powered one. I chewed through both hole saws cutting around the exhaust tips, but probably because they were crappy bits to begin with. Once that was done, I burned through a couple Dremel wheels cutting off the exhaust tips as close to the muffler as I can get them. Here's the part where I now need to insert the Dremel into the interior pipes and cut them out from the inside -- I have no idea how this is supposed to work. 1) I can't see in the pipe to feel exactly where I'm cutting, 2) you have to spend time grinding down the Dremel wheels so they fit inside the interior pipe, making sure you're being careful enough not to break it in the process, and 3) once you have the wheel small enough to fit inside, it's good for about 10 seconds of cutting, and you lather, rinse, repeat. I'm through about 4 wheels on the first pipe and as far as I can tell I'm nowhere close to cutting it loose. There's got to be a trick, but Im running out of ideas... |

Okay, Molsan, just for you I got out in the garage tonight and did the mod. I went with the "no-weld" method, and I'd say it took me a solid 4 hours if I were to have worked straight from disassembly to reassembly.
The majority of the work is tedious, having to grind down a Dremel wheel short enough to fit inside the inner pipe, and then working for a couple seconds until it breaks and you do it again. You sort of eventually get the knack of how far to put the Dremel into the pipe every time, but it's slow going as you work to the point you can muscle the pipe out of the muffler with a pair of pliers. All in all I'd say it turned out pretty well -- unfortunately it's 4AM now and I haven't had a chance to do much more than just give it a quick start and a couple revs, but it sounds great. It'll definitely postpone my buying a $500+ exhaust system for sure. Thanks for pointing me in this direction! I have pictures of my procedure -- but it's basically nothing that hasn't already been posted elsewhere. |

Sweet!
I also heard the dremel part was the worst. I don't have a dremel so thats one reason i held off... i may try an air drill and dremil bits as it should reach the right rpm's. or i'll try to find one. Glad you like it, once you fire it up I wounder if you could tell me if the pitch is higher or lower. I know it will be louder but i am unsure what effect it has on the pitch.

I got it out for a 20 mile ride today to see how things turned out -- and I must say, it's worth the $30 USD or so for the mod. It has a nice grumble to it at idle, and as far as I can tell once you rev it high into the RPM band it's probably just as loud as it was stock.
I don't have a classically-trained ear or anything, but: It's definitely louder at idle and low RPMs. But that's okay -- it's not annoyingly loud and it has a nice grumble, and a slightly lower and throatier note than the cans do stock. I think pitch wise it's about the same as the stock cans, maybe a hair deeper. As far as I can tell once you wind the engine out it returns to more of a stock exhaust sound, but its hard to say since at that point there's wind in my face. I say just do it, it's worth the $30 without a doubt and you'll find yourself pointlessly blipping the throttle. :) |
