Every 16,000 miles and will probably cost about 500-700 US dollars. It ain't cheap. Depends on the hourly labor rate of your local bike shop. Guy before me had my bike's valves done for about $550 or so I think it was.
You bike is not gonna seize up without it if you don't do it or anything. It will mostly likely just not run as efficiently/cleanly (IF the valves needed adjusting during the check), among other things the longer you push it, and how much they are out of spec.

I bought my Y2K when it had 18K on the clock. My mech guru with a very good reputation for his work (ex Honda tech working for himself) recommended a valve check when I got to the 48K milestone. Why so long? Well according to my mech its the typical Honda reliability factor plus the experience this guy has with these motors. And because I dont regularly visit 10K or more on the tacho to regularly, the motors valves arent being worked to the point where more frequent checks are necessary.
So at 48K the valves got checked and all were within the spec tolarances. Cost was about $600 AUS but that also included other work (radiator/clutch/brake fluid flush and replacement) I do the oil/plugs stuff myself. If you know the bikes service history, when the last valve check was done and dont ride near the red all the time - I reckon checks at 20k intervals would be appropriate. If that pushes your comfort zone a bit and the wallet is happy to support more frequent intervals - go for it! Did I mention that I love this bike and its bullet proof motor?!! Cheers!

Shane..winter is coming.. you have time to check it yourself..not a big deal to check them....odds are they are in spec as most do stay in spec for a long time..mine has 55000km on it and they are still in spec..BUT i still check them every now and then...Now if they are NOT in spec and you arnt up to pulling the cams and doing it, THEN pay to get it done or learn how. Otherwise save your $$ if they are in spec..
In the meantime its pretty simple on the 5th gen to remove the valve covers and just check the clearance..all the info is on the vfr sites... give it a try!! enjoy!

My 94 was in spec (perfect) at 17k miles. Shop around, I had mine done by a reputable independent shop and they charged me $170.
