Hindle Exhaust info For 4th Gens

First a little history,I've been looking for a high mount pipe for my 90 since i bought the bike and finally gave up trying to find one for a 3rd gen. This winter i bought a 4th gen exhaust and quickly learned that a high mount for a fourth gen though listed in most catalogs is hard to come by as well unless its a Staintune which is $700 plus tax and shipping.Hindle lists the high mount for a 4th on their webpage but it not in Canadian catalogs but a local dealer called their rep. who it appears called Hindle and it is still available so finally after 3 years it appears i may get my high mount pipe i've wanted.I'm a little happy so i had to share with someone.

Way to stay after it Green1!

Congratrulations for completing your quest for a pipe. I have found that you have to beat on quite a few doors and turn back from quite a few dead ends until you find what you want. It's also nice that people seem to be more willing to help you when you just won't give up. Good effort!

I ordered a Hindle High mount for my 5th gen. Should be in early Jan. I went for the 18" oval, Black anodized, stealth version. Looking forward to it. All my other maintenance, cleaning and polishing is done. Just need my exhaust and then some decent weather (insured late Feb - last year).

I have also been looking for a high mount left side exit for my 3rd gen. No luck yet, just bought a slip on to hold me over till i find the holy grail.

But, i just learned how to use the search feature (jk) and learned that the 4th gen pipes will fit on a 3rd gen. So, now that helps dosent it?

Can you post pics of the pipe when you get it installed?

    Thanks

A fourth gen high muffler assembly will not fit on a third gen system,i never got anywhere with the Hindle mid pipe for a fourth gen and ended finding a used Staintune 4th gen high mount and modding up two small brackets to fit it

No its not a full system,I replaced the collector box part of the 3rd gen with one from a 4th,its a direct fit. From your original 3rd system you can reuse the 2 pipes from the front cylinders and the assembly for the rear cylinders to the flange that mounts to main collector assembly. This will turn your exhaust into a stock 4th gen system front assembly and you'll have a few more options for high pipes as 4th systems are easier to get than 3rd.I had to make the rear bracket to hold the muffler, you can see it in the picture, and another small bracket where it mounts to the pass footpeg, just flatbar bent to shape drilled and painted, easy job.All exhaust parts bought used from EBAY for @$265.00 Canadian including shipping.

In the pictures replace #6(3rd gen) in the first pic with #10(4th gen) from the second pic

I've pretty much done the same thing - found both the Staintune high mount and 1994 collector on ebay UK (I was over there fortunately visiting at the time) and with some help from friends fitted it tonight. Previously I had the 1990 collector (3rd gen) and low mount Staintune pipe. I can attest that the high mount pipe is similar volume at idle but really does bark a bit more at higher rpm. The collector weight difference and I presume restriction (as also evidenced by the more straight-through collector pipe design in the pics above) is significantly less in the 1994 onwards collector.

Note that when fitting this to a 3rd gen you lose the centrestand and the mounting points for the lower red steel vanity covers around the side stand area on both sides. Potentially all this could be reworked if you were creative. Mind you on the 4th Gen collector the LH front pipe weaves its way under the RH front pipe once they get under the bike - it's this RH pipe that stops the refitment of the centrestand. My suspicion is that if you dropped the centerstand down with spacers you'd end up with ground clearance issues. You can't fit the 4th Gen centrestand easily 'cos it mounts off the frame on that variant.

Also I wasn't able to keep the pillion peg - would be interested how you managed to work around this. I just used a single bracket up off where the grab handles mount plus a spacer and this worked out pretty well.

For the passenger peg i just used washers and longer bolts to shim it out for clearance,it took 8-10 per bolt i believe and the vanity covers will go back on you just loose one of the mounting screws but the still will mount and hold ok

Thanks Green1 - will see if I can get a couple of spacers machined up - would you mind measuring the overall thickness of these if that's possible (nearest millimetre)?

BTW, the red steel fairing lower covers either side of where the centrestand used to be - how did you attach these? - the old collector pick up points also are lost in when changing out Gen 3 for 4 collector.

I assume from the pics you did not manage to find a way to refit the centre stand. The 4th gen collector does seem to sit quite low.

    Thanks in advance.

As stated before with the 4th gen collector you only loose 1 of the 2 mounting bolts per side and both lower panels will be fine with only 1 bolt, see pic1&2
As for the passenger peg,i used some 6mm(i think) stainless washers, looks like 5 on the front bolt, cann't see the rear bolt and as it turns out the stock mounting bolts to shim the peg hanger out from the subframe. Its only out @7mm from the subframe. The pipe tips out a little at the back and just clears the tire ,pic3,but has been this way for a since installed with no problems. There is a threaded hole in the subframe that is directly above the rear mounting point on the collector,i used it with a piece of flatbar to make the rear hanger, you can see it in the pics and another piece of flatbar mounts from the footpeg to the front mount on the pipe. The center stand your on your own, never had one and only use a homemade rear stand on the rear axle.

As I haven't modified my Staintune high mount, my installation is slightly different to yours Green1. The tie down loop that's on the RH rear footpeg fouls my muffler can. If I grind this off it might be possible to refit it. Spacing out it looks like around 7mm at the front bolt and maybe 10mm at the rear bolt could do it. Will update you when it's complete

Looks good,my best advice now to help fit it would be to fit the footpeg as far out as you can, remove the rear hanger and loosen the front clamp so the pipe move.Get the pipe to an acceptable position and the bend up your hangers to hold it in place. This is a crappy pic of the bracket i made for the footpeg, its about 1 1/4 inches long, you'll get the idea anyway
