What dictates exhaust can?

My new (old) '87 700f2 came with a 4 to 1 system and it came with a gutted muffler. Sound incredibly loud and cool but my neighbors might have me arrested. Can anyone tell me what dictates the can you use besides exhaust pipe size? Can you use a pipe from a different style bike and rejet? I thought it had something to do with back pressure? Thanks for any lessons.

This is what I'm working with.
