to start off i just bought my 86 interceptor last week. it is my first bike and i know nothing about bikes...i mean nothing so if this is a stupid question im sorry. my problem is when the battery sits for a while it just completly drains to the point where the headlights even come on. i took the battery to ask powersports and they tested it and it had a full charge. so the other day i jumped the battery and the bike started right up. two hours later it was completly dead again? is this a common problem any suggestons would be great.
thanks

You may remember the 86 vf1000r in ga that was for sale seller had youtube video of the engine noise. I bought it after the carfull examination of the 20+ pictures he sent me. I got my own shipper from u ship.com

The shippper said he could hav it to me in 7 days the contract was for 10 days. well 34 days later it is here I had to threaten to call the cops and report it stolen and delivery date was postponed 5 times. seller was transporting on a flat bed and said he carfully wraps bikes in plastic.

The bike showed up today trashed. It was loosly under a tarp that slapped against the paint for 3000 miles and chaffed it a little, the muffler is ground all the way though, the tail is ground and half gone the subframe is ground down the tail light housing is gone. the muffler pipe broke in half, the front fender gouged real bad, and the belly fairing is shattared at the front.

I said what the hell and the first thing he said was "its not like it fell off the trailer or somthing. he insists that this is the way he picked it up. I asked him where it has been stored for the last month and his response was "it hasnt been ridden the miles are the same" Then I noticed the speedo cable unhooked.

What the hell. He didnt charge me for shipping cause of the time delay that he had 10 excuses for. But what can I do? The uship website is proving worthless. I can find anything about his so called bussinses. "first choice" He is an independent hauler with just a f450 and a big trailer. his phone number is based out of SC. I explained to him that these peices are not replacable.

I need a tail section bad and pipes bad! If anyone has a lead on one please help me out. I can fix everything else.

What can I do? I want this guy to pay!!!!:mad::mad:

I was hoping some of you folks with fork experiance could take a look at these pictures and tell me what the odds are that these sliders will accept seals.

There's some damage at the top of the slider tube and there is some amount of out-of-round. I've never done forks. I can see from the parts list what order the seals go in but it's hard to tell where everything seats. There are some nicks in the tube too but I can try to polish down any high spots. :frown:

Clearly the right answer would be to replace them but that just isn't a likely option at this point unless they fall from the sky right into my lap. I can attempt to massage some of the damage out of the tube... Anyway, both tubes have some damage in the same spot. I'm sure one of you can tell me how this happens but all I can figure is some dummy uses ratchet strap hooks on the fork tubes during transport.

This is the outboard side of the left hand tube. The tube on the left has the worst damage.

Another photo from the front of the bike. Because of the orientation, you see color removed from the tube in the bottom of the picture. This is the inboard side of the tube and that is just from a line chaffing over the years. Look at the outboard side of the photo (top of the picture) and see the deformation.
I'm wondering what people would be interested in wanting off the bike and the amount willing to spend on said part so I know what to offer the guy.

Yes...the hindle is up for grabs also. (If the price is worth the effort to remove and ship)
There is no seat and the tank is Fubar'd.

So I've got an '86 VF500 that runs perfectly in temperate weather (50's-70's or so). Thing is, when it dips into the low 40's or below and I travel at a high rate of speed of 65 mph or better (i.e. pretty damn cold with windchill factored in), there's this weird noise that occurs.

The best I can describe it is as a kind of medium to high-pitched whine kind of like how a vacuum cleaner (I'm thinking particularly of a shop vac) sounds when it's on its last legs or all blocked up and just ain't working right. It sounds like it's coming from the radiator/fan area, but I can't be 100% sure. It stops when I slow down, and doesn't start until said conditions are met again.

Any ideas?

I do a lot of driving for work and I don't know how I got along without my Garmin GPS. Now that the 500 has been running reliably, I've taken advantage of the warmer days around Denver to use the bike. Unfortunately, I probably only get about 2-3hrs of battery life out of the Garmin so I've set out on a quest to add a 12VDC power point to the bike.

All weather power point picked up from Checker Auto parts for $12

Intended location for mounting, looks accessible with ample clearances

The challenge is finding a good supply of power without creating other problems like tying into a pre existing circuit. Laying in the tool box of spare misc spare parts, I had a power wire with built in fuse I could have connected directly to the battery. This option was not my favorite due to concerns of having the wire chaffe or burn somewhere along the way between the battery and the dash panel.

The factory fuse panel has two empty spaces labeled as "spares." I removed the panel and gently pried off the rear cover. The spares location did not have any electrical connections. Using female spade connectors, the pocket clip from a ball point pen, and two part epoxy, I added connections.

The above picture shows a fuse in the lower right location. In the photo below, the fuse panel is flipped over and the back panel is removed. The new connections are on the lower left (reverse of the top view picture above). The yellow wire is leaving the fused connection and will get routed to the recepticle. The flat metal bar is the pocket clip from the ball point pen soldered to the main buss and also soldered to the spade connector for the fuse. The fuse was put in place with the spade connectors (to hold everything in exactly the right location) and 2 part epoxy added to keep the spades in the correct location when the fuse is removed.

By this afternoon, the epoxy will be setup enough that I can remount the rear cover, mount the panel, and start routing the wire. More to follow.

I was wondering if anyone out there has tried or given some thought to switching out the stock V500F fork sliders for CBR600F Hurricane fork sliders.

Of course you would still have the anti-dive issue but this switch would allow for the installation of the Hurricane's larger rotors and lighter calipers while still keeping the longer (as required for clearance) VF500F fork tubes.

Many thanks!

Ok, i'm a bit of a noob, but i need to drain the tank of my 85 VF500F. I have the clymer book, but i'm still a little confused about if i need a vacuum pump to fully drain the tank or not. I disconnected the hose from the tank to the fuel pump/filter and drained most of the tank by turning the fuel switch from on to reserve and back a couple of times. I can hear a little more fuel in there sloshing around, but can't seem to get at it.

I posted this on VFRD, and figured I'd show you guys too. I'll try to bring this log up to speed quickly.

A 1986 VF500F Interceptor. Needs some TLC and a new lock set.
I bought it from an auction company who bought it from a storage company it was abandoned with. The owner parked it in a storage cell, and left it. Hasn't paid rent in over a year, and can't be contacted (phone # no longer in service, mail undeliverable, ect.). That's why I need a new lock set.
It's all there and in decent condition. I was a small engine mechanic for 3 years, and gave it the going over, and it is in pretty good condition mechanically.
It'll be my winter project. It needs some work, but I have the time.

I snapped some pics after the Bill of Sale was signed, I'll take more when I get it home.
Looks like it was down on the left side, but no major damage found as of yet. Obviously I'll need a new clutch handle.
The duct tape is over a hole in the tank, which I patched up with JB Weld tonight. I don't know how long it'll last, so I'm in the market for a new tank. :frown:
The rear wheel is on a dolly because it WAS out of clutch fluid. (and the guys who moved it don't know anything about bikes, so they didn't think to put it in neutral).

I've been working on it for about a week now. The new ignition and key is in the mail, as soon as it gets here I'll install it. For right now I removed the key-part of the ignition and am just turning the switch.

I've had it running a couple of times on carb clean, and it sounds sweet.

The Bad:
- The clutch seems to need some work, I think I might have to replace the hydralic piston (anyone know where to get one?).
- The starter solenoid also needs replacing, though I'm going to try to rebuild it (can't hurt). I got it started by shorting the battery to the starter terminal on the solenoid.
- the hole in the tank/rusted tank. JB Weld won't last forever.
- I had to destroy the tank lock to get it open. I'll see if a locksmith can re-key it, if not I'll have to buy another cap.

Some pictures from the other night:

I'm having some problems with the "Start" switch returning to the normal position (meaning the headlight will remain off unless I pull the switch out). Any ideas on a fix?

I cleaned out my garage, and it is now my workshop for the winter. Complete with lights and a space heater.

More news later!

Because I'm bored and can rarely leave stuff well enough alone, I'm considering cutting holes in my fairing. The bike is new to me this fall and the warmest weather I've ridden it in is mid to upper 70's. She seems to run pretty hot (on the factory guage which I have no idea how acurate it is and doesn't quantify with any real numbers).

So the fairing has some moch scoops on it. They are molded about .800 of an inch into the fairing. I'm considering cutting it out plus about .800 forward. I figure this will help scoop some air while moving and increase the airflow around the hot engine. I can get some edging like the fairing has around the edges to dress up the cutout and make it look factory. I figure if I used a high speed dremmel type tool or rotozip cutter, it would make a nice cut in the fiberglass.

Here is a picture as she sits and one where I drew in a representation of what I'm talking about in microsoft paint. Lemme know what you guys think.
