Got my 520 chain conversion kit in over the weekend... Looks all pretty even if they did send a gold chain instead of silver - don't care enough to...

Got my 520 chain conversion kit in over the weekend... Looks all pretty even if they did send a gold chain instead of silver - don't care enough to cross ship even though Sum Of All Parts offered...

However... This is the first chain bike I've owned - Previously I've had (Magnas, Sabers, a Z1300) were all shaft drive... The VFR (97) is new to me and since I don't know the maintenance history on the bike, I just ordered a full conversion kit (Stock front, +2 rear)... So I've never messed with the adjuster before... Discovered that my tool kit was missing the big adjuster wrench, but the local Honda deal had one, so...

Everything went smoothly until here at the end, front sprocket just slipped off (major grungy, but not stuck), really big honking bolt cutters fixed the master link, everything lined up nice... Until I went to adjust the rear wheel to all the way up so that I can figure the chain length...

Following the (excellent, BTW) how-to on here, I loosened the 17mm nut on the butt of the swing arm and tried to adjust the bearing holder, however it took a couple of taps with the mallet to get it to move either way - it freed up some, but was/is notably stiff, is that usual? The real though is that it appears to not so much move the wheel back and forth as side-to-side... I adjusted it counter-clockwise about 3 times and noticed that the front of the tire was contacting the swing arm... I'm assuming that this is a *bad*thing*... :frown: adjusting it clockwise seems to pull it off the swing arm but I'm wondering what this indicates... Bent rear axle? Is it because the rear tire is in the air not on the ground? (It's on the center stand) Because I didn't have the chain on? None of those (except the bent axle) seem likely, but I though I'd ask before borrowing a truck and hauling it to the Honda dealer (so much for saving a few bucks by doing it at home, LOL!)

Here's my new-to-me '96 VFR with the seat cowl I just acquired:

Here's my new-to-me '96 VFR with the seat cowl I just acquired:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

After ten years of piloting a cruiser and twelve years before that without a bike I'm still trying to get re-accustomed to riding/operating in the sportbike format ... ergos, controls, responsiveness, etc.
But it's coming back... was pretty weird when I went the other way too!

The extreme quiet of the stock exhaust was wiggin' me out , or adding to it.

HAD to do something about that!
Did a three part partial gut on the muffler.
I drilled the welds out holding the end cap onto the can to get access to the internals.

1st stage work... results, near diddly-squat!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here’s part two (see hole I sawed in the partition at the back end of the outlet pipe.) Made some improvement but not much:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here’s step three. Cut rear of inner canister out and removed wrapped baffle outlet pipe.
She barks some now, even closed up... more so with the end cap off as in this pic to show work:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

To close the can back up I rotated the end cap a few degrees from the drilled out welds, drilled & tapped and secured things with 3 stainless button heads.
I've used those fasteners on many mods over the years as they give a nice finished appearence... kinda' like high-end factory rivets.

I'm quite happy with the result, she sings pretty sweetly now... not overly loud, nice tonality.

Burbles along nicely trolling in traffic or doin' a gentle gallop up backroads.
Only lets out a bit of a rip if I twist it with resolve.

Further exhaust specs will need to wait until I'm squared away with my saddlebag situation. Bike came with GIVI monokey 21's but Im wanting to upsize to 36's.

First I need to figure how I'll re-fab the mounts... they're too high, to the rear and canted for my tastes.
Goin' to adjust that some, then see what needs doing to allow for proper clearence with whatever final exhaust system I put together.

Gonna' be busy over the winter! :faint:

Probably gonna' do a stage one re-jet and K&N at some point anyway since I plan on another pipe once I have the luggage situation straight.

Maybe something along this line:
Think that would look sweet peekin' out from under a sidebag!

The rear wheel on my VFR has a tiny pinhole leaking crack near where one of the 5 spokes meets the rim.
I knew the rim had a dent when I bought it but it seemed to hold air well, when I had the rear tire replaced it tested fine but now has a very slow leak.

I didn't like the fact that it was bent but now with a leak i'm not happy with it at all.
Are there any options besides replacement, could it be welded and rebalanced?

Also, anyone know any good places other than Ebay and Honda ($497 new) to get wheels?

Scenario:

Bike was running fine last week up till Friday night. Bike untouched over weekend.

Use the bike today when it went dark I noticed the dash lights, rear tail lights and front pilot/side lamp were out.
All these items on same 10A fuse which had blown.
Change fuse. All seems well when bike is stationary. Ride away and fuse blows again.

Tonight change both rear tail lights for new.
Pull front fairing apart. Remove instrument cluster. Remove any suspect 'capless' bulbs. Clean PCB(which is looking a bit suspect in certain places).

Look for broken/chaffed wires around loom and connectors.

Turn on ignition with nothing connected to that circuit (all bulbs removed),
instrument cluster removed.
Add bulbs one by one. All working.
Add instrument cluster. All working.
Start bike and leave running. All good.

Put fairing back on. Start bike and fuse blows again.

Does this ring bells with anyone.

Your thoughts gentlemen please.

1993 was the year that Honda made the US version VFR 750 in only one color - white. It was not a huge sales success in that color even though the venerable VFR was still on every magazine's best bike list. Honda authorized various dealers to "adjust" the solid white paint scheme. This is one of those repainted bikes and the paint is outstanding in color scheme and quality.
I am the third owner of this bike since August 1998. It has 5900 miles, Heli-bars, Metzeler MEZ4 tires (80% tread remaining), original tool kit, solo seat cover, owner's manual and service manual. This is a quality piece of kit in the reliable Honda tradition. Wonderful all around performer.

First post on any forum. Anywhere.
Well, the body looked good in the pictures... But it turns out every piece of plastic is broken. Everything held together with cable ties. I guess as "emptor," I didn't "caveat."
How do I get "new" plastic without spending twice what the machine is worth even if it's in great shape? I see ads for aftermarket bodywork for '86 & '87 bikes, and for 5th and 6th generation models. But nothing for the 1990. Anyone know how I can replace all the plastic? Does plastic from other model years fit the 1990 model?
I suppose that I should say that I am more interested in a nice-riding machine than I am in a sano restoration.
Thanks for any direction you can provide.

The sun was shining this morning, and a ride was tempting- but thought I had better wait for insurance / safety inspection/ registration, etc to go through first.

So, today's spare time involved reading the owner's manual, leafing through the service manual, taking a few photos, and playing with Photoshop.

I am sure I will have some questions here in the future. Have spent some time reading the VFRworld forums. LOTS of good info!! And i am sure that i have just scratched the surface so far.

cheers,

I came out this morning and found that someone had backed into my '96 VFR. It was upright, but had some small cracks in the right side fairing, the mirror was bent back, and the brake pedal was pushed under the heat shield. I pulled it out so I could ride home, but found that if I pushed down, it would just stick, so I opted to just use the front brakes. (note: it's harder than you think to remember to not instinctively use your rear brake along wit the front).

Luckily (?) I picked up a spare brake pedal 15 months ago when my bike was last bumped by a car. I found that I didn't *need* it then, but now I really shouldn't be driving the way it is.

Looking at the Clymer manual, the first step in replacing the brake pedal is to remove the rear wheel. Does anyone know why that is? I mean, I'll do it, just missing the logic here.
