So the riding season is pretty much done in this part of the world, and it's time to set up for winter maintenance in the basement. Having parked up the bike I was inspecting the tyres, Avon Storm ST's, and noticed something odd. The rear chicken strips are about 1/4 inch wide, more or less half of the AVON logo at the edge of the tyre is scuffed. The front strips on the other hand are about 21/2 inches wide. Now in the past, and on all my other bikes, the front strips have always been wider than the rear strips, but never by anywhere near this much, maybe three or four times wider at the front on average. I might add that the Avons stick like shit to a blanket in any kind of weather, and on almost any surface, and never a hint of sliding from either end at any speed or lean angle (except maybe one steep, downhill motorway exit ramp where they do back in if I'm hard on the front brake, but this is with the bike almost upright). And I do like 'spirited' riding.

Rear stock shock is on second to the top (hardest) notch, and rebound is on the stiff side. Front compression is again on the stiffish side. Tyre pressures are 36lbs front and 42lbs rear.

This is not me, but a local road that we usually ride similarly.
YouTube - SV650 , SV Riders on T* Road
Any opinions?

My much loved 5th gen went 77810mi and likely will go no further
Last night on the way home a deer ran into the left front of my bike. I was going about 55 or so and we all fell down and went boom. The deer and I got up, but the bike didn't make out too well. The upper and left side fairing are destroyed as well as the gauge cluster and most of the right side. I'll let the insurance company decide, but likely it's totaled. (that really sucks!!) I'll try to get some pix.
On the plus side, I walked away with only some back pain (turned out to be a broken rib) and a badly scratched arai helmet. My roadcrafter saved my ass!!! Those suits are worth every penny!!
That was probably the best bike I've ever owned and I've gotta get another if this one's not repairable!

I have an aqueous parts cleaner at work, and a solvent based one also. I'm not sure about using them since I'd like to leave all the injectors and harnesses attached. Can I just spray the assembly down with carb cleaner?

Can you believe it, only bought the bike less than 12 hours ago, and a combination of cold tyres and slippery drive sent the bike down the road!!! I'm heart broken!! At least the only damage is cosmetic. Saying that, I can't seem to find replacement fairings anywhere.

I'm looking for the left hand lower and an upper fairing yellow. Preferrably in the uk, but at this moment in time I'm willing to look anywhere! Seen a few on ebay from Hong Kong but the reviews of them don't sound great.

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Now my cruising speed gives a temp of *180.~*183. Before I was getting *196.~*200. at the same speeds. I did about a 60% coolant mix.

I knew the Toyota stuff was good because of 20 years of wheeling in my 85 4x4(now has 480,000. miles)the engine still looks new(on the inside).

But I did not think the temps would change, that much for the better!

I just replaced my battery today. I've had electrical problems since the week I bought my 2000 vfr about 2500mi/3 months ago. It started with a dead battery, then more frequent clock resets. Last week, I had to jump start several times. After learning a bit about issues with the electrical systems, I think I narrowed it down to a bad battery. It was a bit too fast recharging on the tender, the voltages at idle were good and at higher rpm steady. So it didn't seem like the r/r was bad (PO said it was replaced by his PO) and all contacts looked good.

So I replaced the WestCo YTX12-BS battery with a Scorpion YTZ14S. I think this model is for the 6th gen but I just added a wood block for a spacer. My reasoning was that the YTZ14S had better specs like higher CCA. I paid $68 w/shipping instead of 121 for a yuasa. Didn't like the tiny terminal bolts, so I used the thicker ones from the westco. Maybe you can see this in the attachment.

Here are the details.
2000 Interceptor
20k miles on bike

Sypmtoms:
Hard starts while cold
**Hard starts while warm/hot
**Power loss all over, but mostly above 4-5k rpms
**Feels like throttle is "behind" at 4-5k rpm's, then stays "behind". ("Behind" - refers to the sensation that I feel like im getting the power of only an 1/8th twist though I'm really giving it a 1/3 twist) It's REALLY noticable.
**Random deaths. - example: going down the highway, cruising at about 70mph in 6th gear. I'll down shift to 5th, and when I go to give it gas, it dies. I try to reestart it, but to no prevail. I'm not 100% sure it dies when I give it gas, or when I shift, or even if its a moment later, as I am always watching the traffic, not the bike :(. They also occur while driving down the road, after I notice that the throttle is noticably "behind". It feels like it is getting worse, then it dies.

I popped a stored code once, it was saying I was getting a poor connection to the MAF sensor. I tightened the connection, still problematic.

Thoughts? Should I buy a new sensor? Hope on dumb luck thats the problem? I only have a week to get this fixed and im on a limited budget (about $600).

_______________
(Hard Starts) refers to having to press the start button numerous times, sometimes as much as 10 times.
(**) refers to an itermittent problem

I've been toying with putting the stickers back on the Viffer and finally just went out and got a set of basic black wings on the tank and a VFR sticker for the belly... the problem is, I don't like how they look when I compare them to the stock decals. Bigger problem, OEM's from Ron Ayers cost about $28/side for the VFR logo on the belly and $21 for the tank wings.

Any thoughts on where to go to get something a little more substantial than I have... like the look of the stock stickers against the yellow body work. Considering painting the belly portion, below the crease, flat black, too...

I've got the plug out, as with it in, the muffler is near silent.

The quality is also top notch! I'm sure a Staintune would be thicker, but I'm feeling this muffler is just right. Install was a stap, and took all of 10 minutes.

I made a sound file but it sounds nothing like the pipe and would only give the wrong impression .

Part it or sell it.
there you go that's the whole deal.

99 VFR 12,000 miles
I had it for about 4oo miles or so & low speed low-sided it into a car that had stopped for no reason.

Damage:
front fairing; fairing stay; & the attachment point on the frame is busted. left side fairing, right side fairing. small dent in tank. headlight. front window. turn signal housing. both mirrors. both dumbo lights, probably a bunch of stays.

What's good:
well....it runs. and you can ride it - as long as you dont mind all that plastic flapping around in the wind. it kinda looks like you are turning right all the time.
Front forks & fender wheel & brakes are fine.
seat, tail section fairing, tail lights.
the R/R works very well.
Motor starts runs really well.

A guy has offered me $700 to take it as-is.
I can part it out for.........wheels, seat, tail, lights motor......maybe a grand?
dunno.
There is no insurance.
I've replaced the bike with a 98.
what would YOU do?

TIA.

So I purchased my '99 last Friday and rode it 60 miles home. It's been down before and definitely needs a little work. Today I fired it up to move it and it dies immediately when I put it in 1st gear. When I bought the bike, I noticed it only starts when in neutral so I need to investigate the switch on the clutch lever I'm guessing. Today's issue is different. The clutch is working and I know it's not stalling the engine. I'm pretty sure it's electronic. The previous owner looks to have cut the wires on the side stand sensor which I'm assuming will by-pass that safety feature. Are there any other of those "safety features" that could be causing this?

The only thing that happened since I was able to ride the bike is that I accidentally "set it down" on its right side in my shop. I don't have a center stand so I was using a forklift to (stupidly) get the rear tire off the ground so I could check the chain. The bike fell off balance and I had to slowly set it down on it's side.
