What goes here?

I am trying to restore a really badly mistreated 2000VFR800,this was how she looked like when i picked her up,


so far got all the fairings off

while I metriculously marked all wiring plugs to note what goes where, i cam e across this plug on the subframe,

it seems to be missing a hook up to something and since i am totaly new to VFR's i have no idea what goes there, here is a closer view of what i am taking about,

Can some one help me out here, so that i know what i am missing here? please attach pics if possible! Also realised that one of the engine mounting bolts was missing too,

my understanding is that there is one bolt that goes here from left to right and there is a spacer that goes in with it, am i correct? what side does the spacer go??
any help would be appreciated!

I think the first thing you should do is thrash the living hell out of whoever trashed this machine in the first place. What a travesty! Looks like it was under water.

wow, missing bolts on both sides. makes me want to go check mine. not sure on the plug. i just went out and looked at my bike and couldn't find one. possibly for plugging in trickle charger? or heated accessories?

The tape doesn't match the rest of it, probably an aftermarket add on. I think reg71 is right. Good luck with the restoration. Keep us updated on how it goes. My 2000 was stolen a five years ago, and I just bought another VFR a few months back.

humm.. i dont think it is for an after market part, but cant rule out that possibility either! i know it is definitely not for a trickle charger since the plug end seems more like a stock set up. any more input on the engine mounts? i was able to get the engine mount bolt off ebay along with a bunch of extra hardware, i think i got the spacer along with it too. if some one is currently working on their bike or removed their airbox, that would give me a better picture about the engine mount.

You know, I've never seen engine mount bolts on a Honda 'just fall out'. I'd check the VIN on the engine and make sure it matches the bike (if Honda does that sort of thing), then I'd get a service manual and torque EVERY SINGLE BOLT on that bike. Remember, the swingarm is bolted to the engine and if the engine has been out...

Follow the plug's wires back to where it merges with the rest of the harness to see how it connects with it. If it uses 'vampire taps' or worse, then you have your answer.

I'd like to hear the circumstances behind your acquisition of this bike. There is an interesting story here.

I'm pretty sure that the plug is the service check plug, that you short out to get the reading from the Fi light if you have an ECM fault. It should just be taped up.

As a check, one wire (the yellow one) should go to the A1 conection on the ECU.

I think you find that one of the previous owners stripped it down to bare frame so he/she could polish it, and simply did not put that bolt back in. It should be pretty obvious where the spacer goes though, you should not have to pry it over anymore than 1/16" to get it in. If there is no clearance, it goes in the other side.

hope someone can help with this .my 98 has 64,000 miles and just last week the outside temp reading is 15 to 18 degrees to high.the engine temp is reading normal like always.any ideas,thanx

I bought the bike off ebay sincethe guy lived just 3 hrs away. The bike had been sitting outside his backyard (from what i am guessing it must have been there since 2003). I am trying to strip the bike down to the frame and probably powdercoat the frame and wheels black, clean up the engine and surroundings (lot of spiders, leaves and dirt stuck in there) and then put it back together. As far as history goes the bike has a salvage title on it and had hit the curb on the left side. The seller had bought it from a friend with the idea of fixing it put but never bothered to do it. BUt it seems that he has taken all the hardware he could possibly take out of the bike without it faling apart!
I am trying to tag every connection, every wire, hose etc before i get it off the bike, so that i have a go by when i put it back together!
on another note, i did find the spacer in place, inbetween the engine and the frame, except no bolt! my assumtion is that he used that bolt to restore his CBR, that he was building! Will update pics this evening!

What a travesty, stealing parts from a VFR to restore a CBR. Shame on him, that's what microfiche is for. I personally have both and would never steal or borrow parts off one to fix another. Oh well, good louck with your restoration, hope it all works out ok.

I dont think he knew the worth of a VFR, honestly i am a kawasaki guy, but ever since i aquired this bike and reading a lot on this forum, i am beginning to appreciate all the cool features on this bike, i cant wait to get this thing put together and fire it up!
i can understand why he took hardware off the vfr, have you priced hardware at the dealer, the are outrageous! i think he had just given up onthe vfr and just had it sitting around. Good for me, or else i wouldnt have got it for a steal!

ok, latest update, just took of the front end off the VFR800, realised that the steering stem is bent (i am sure the forks are too, but that for later) anyways anybody here knows if i can swap outthe fifth generation triple clamp set with the sixth generation VFR triple set, or doesn any one have a fifth generation lower triple clamp they want to sell me?

finally uploaded some pics to photobucket last nite, here is what i got so far,

got the front end off, radiators, fairing bracket, subframe, marked allthe gazillion connectors with diferent colored tape to know which goes where,
now for a closer look,

Took out the injectors,


got some spiders and other critters too!

injectors need some cleaning too,

on another note, here is the bent steering stem i was talking about earlier,

any one have a spare lower triple clamp, cant find any on ebay either!!
well, thats it for now, got a lot of cleaning to do!

Alrigh! so last weekend i opened up the sproket cover and as sual more dirt! seems like this engine has never seen any cleaning at all!



so after nearly 2 days and countless hrs of cleaning...





Next stop, got to clean the swingarm and the fuel injectors!!

thanks! I still cant believe that anyone could just let such a magnificent bike rot away in their backyard for nearly 5 years! i cant wait to get her all hooked up and fire her up!

I wonder if those missing bolt holes had frame sliders there. The right side fairing looks like there was a hole cut there? Just a thought.

that absolutely makes sense, never thought about that!! Anyways i looked up parts list and found that honda used the same bolt for mounting a cbr1000F in 91 model, so i was able to buy the bolt off ebay for real cheap! now if i can get the cleaning done, i can get the frame put back!
