No power and rattle???

O.K., I am new to the VFRworld forum, so forgive me if this question has been asked before.

2000 model VFR

I started the bike after letting it sit for 3 months. The bike had trouble starting with fresh battery. Once started it idles fine, but on the first ride there is a huge loss of power and when I opened it up I got nothing but some type of rattling noise. The VFR has 11,798 miles on it and has always been maintained with OEM parts.

I pulled the plugs and will install new ones tommorrow along with a fresh tank of gas. I opened the throttle and looked down into the system and can see black oily residue inside the butterfly valves. I also took the exhaust off to see if anything was in the exhaust. Nothing in there, absolutely clean.

What worries me is the rattling noise when you give the VFR throttle.

Any ideas?????

thanks in advance.
