Coolant temp 220-225 at 80mph with ambient air temp stating 109

seem like a normal range? I ask because prior to changing the oil/filter & topping off the coolant (level was at minimum) it was running cooler (around 195-200) in these same or very similar conditions. I searched a bit and found various members with various running coolant temps. The fact that it changed towards the warmer end of the range for me is a little puzzling. Any ideas on why this would be?

That sounds way too warm. In Hotlanta I've ridden in 95 degree weather going 70 mph and the temp guage never goes above 180.

It sounds like the thermostat has to be replaced.

Mine is running strangely warm lately, a bit like yours and my first step is to flush the living shit out of the system. I think there are system cleaners you can buy at Autozone, I'm gonna pony up for some of that stuff. New coolant and see if I need a next step. Its a bit odd yours is running hot at speed. You may have air in the system too, you might need to burp the cross hose in the front of the bike.

MD

PS -Last time I was at Yosemite, I got a flat tire at Glacier Point!

Thanks for the replies, I'll keep an eye on it has I haven't seen it get that high again since. Is the thermostat buried under the airbox on the 5ths?

Yeppers....under the airbox, and the entire throttlebody....not hard work necessarily, but lots of work to get at it.

Like mello said, you might have air in your system.

Things it could be:

Air trapped in system (take off radiator cap when it is running and warm, rev the engine a few times, and you can also burp the hose, by squeeze and releasing it.)
Old depleted coolant (sludge build up)
bad/leaking radiator cap
sticking thermostat
Improper coolant to water mixture (too much anti-freeze)
Bent radiator fins
alignment of the planets
Michael Jackson catching his hair on fire

etc, etc....
