My new to me '99

Hi All. I've been lurking for awhile. I purchased my first bike back in July. It was a $500 '93 Ninja 500 that wasn't running at the time. I fixed it, rode it for a few weeks, and sold it for enough profit to pay for my helmet and MSF course. I've done tons of research and knew I wanted a 5th Gen VFR. I picked this one up yesterday:

It's a '99 with about 18k miles. It's pretty rough cosmetically. I rode it the 60+ miles home and it rides well, but the clutch slips pretty bad above 6k at anything more than half throttle and the chain is toast as well. It has a pretty bad exhaust leak. Everything seems good as far as electronics. It's definitely a bit of a project. I paid $1250 for it. It does have brand new tires. I also discovered that it has a Power Commander II.

I have a clutch off of a bike with 6k on the clock that I would be willing to sell cheap, say $25 plus shipping basket disks and all. let me know if you are interested. I love those kind of projects! I bought my 98 as a basket case for $550 and went from there. Let me know if you have any other parts you need also... I have alot of spares for this bike. Bye the way great find for $1250

Cool find at a nice price! Specially with the new tires. With winter coming on very soon you have all the time needed to get ready for spring riding. Enjoy the project.

Welcome, nice find. Sounds like a decent price and the '99's are the fastest of all the VFR gens.

Thanks everyone. I think I got a pretty good deal. He was asking $2100 and I talked him way down obviously. I'm sure the forums here, along with ebay, will be my best friends as I start working on it.

Steven: Thanks for the offer on the clutch. It may be a little while before I start working on the bike so I may contact you later if it's still available.

I saw that bike on craigslist. I had the guy send me some pics of it. you definatly have a project bike. Congrats on the bike that is a pretty awsome price considering what he was asking for it. Said he was selling because he just had a kid.

Yeah, he's been advertising it for a couple months and kept dropping the price. I finally decided to make him a low offer and see what happens. It's a little rougher than it looks in my pictures for sure. So far my shopping list is: clutch, chain/sprockets, clutch lever, RH mirror, gas tank, header, plastics. I hope to have it mechanically sound by spring and start working on cosmetics after that.
