Paint for 86 Honda VFR

Hi guys. I have an 86 VFR 750 I'm getting painted right now. Both lowers and the upper. I bought the decals and want base/clear with clear over the decals. The painter is having a hard time finding paint for this bike. I was surprised because I've been lurking on the VFR sites and never heard anyone complain about this. The white paint has a code (Shasta White) and I figured he would just go to the big auto body supply company (Madison, WI) here in town and match the blue using the upper fairing. He claims to have $200 in paint at this point just for the white paint. This Is PPG paint. I've bought Sikkens and Glasurite paint and never paid that much. Maybe he's trying too hard to match the color.

He says the only true source for the blue he's found is color rite which I think caters to low rider cars. That would mean using all their stuff. Does anyone have a source or formula for the blue? He's talking about several stage paint but I told him just do your best about matching.

I had some touch up paint made for my 750 a few years back. According to my notes from that, these are the Honda color names and codes:

Shasta White - NH138
Fighting Red - R134
Candy Aleutian Blue - PB127MU

I had them matched with PPG paint. Here is the info:

Honda Red - DBC3001 (Mars Red)
Honda White - DBC898 (Grand Prix Weiss)
Honda Blue - DBC103762 (Liberty Blue Mica)

I thought all the red on this bike was from a decal.

Was the blue a good match? My painter says the blue is a real 'candy' color and I assume what you listed is single stage. Thats what I wanted though, I didn't want to go overboard matching colors, especially with 22 year old faded paint with dirt in it.

Something is not right with the paint codes listed.
The first 3 codes given are on the bike but did not translate into a PPG code when I did my bike. Consequently, I gave my paint guy (years doing it) panels to color match. Of course it was a perfect match doing it that way. The second set of PPG codes are not right.
The DBC marker set just before the number simply tells that it is a DBC paint and has nothing to do with the paint code. Secondly the paint code itself is never designated by numbers only. A proper paint code is designated by Alpha letters and numbers like NH 57. This number can then be translated to a Sikken, Dupont, Sherwin Williams etc code. At todays prices a blue pearl will run you about $75 per pint with the solids not much less in cost. A DBC requires a clear coat to work, so you add the cost of the clear wich is about $65 a quart. Add catalyst to the clear which is about $45-60 for a pint of DU-5 or DCX 65. Add the cost of epoxy primer $50 and its correlate catlyst $40 ,reducer $55 ( generic is about $20 cheaper). well you get the idea...

An expert painter can rig the color fairly close. But for a near perfect color match the mixer has to know what he is doing and want to take the time to make it right. If the painter shoots the paint with too high or low pressure and/or at the wrong distance he can be 2 shades off (very noticeable) even with a perfect color match.

Today you could easily be at $400 for PPG materials alone but you could cut corners here and there for cost.
If someone is to take this much time and effort to get the paint right, the painter needs to put at least 5 clear coats and color sand. After you do it right, it looks awesome like mine did.

There is a GM paint that's a VERY close match for the metallic blue

was wondering if you checked the sticky at the beginning of this forum, as there is a post from someone who stocks the original colors and has prices listed. It seemed VERY expensive for the colors to me, but hey, im not a purist. I also have an 86 and plan on replacing the bodywork shortly (cracks and scrapes), but im not planning on trying for an exact match as factory. I just like the RW&B color scheme so i will probably try to stick with it.

Yes, my bike is a 1986 VFR750F Red / White / Blue. The paint was a very close match. The paint was already in great shape to start with.

I'm certainly not an expert in paint codes, but I just doubled checked my cans of PPG touch up paint and those numbers are indeed the numbers on the can. I also listed the name of paint printed on each can as a second point of reference.

I'd like to get that GM paint code. If you have the year of GM and what model of car it comes off, that would be very helpful. It costs more to make a color from scratch than having a close base match to start with.

If your still looking. Try 91U its called Arrival Blue Metalic. Would look great on a bike. 2004 Silverado

I'm going to be in the same boat within a year, I don't have four to five hundred dollars to spend on paint. here is my philosophy on it, if youare restoring the bike to be perfect like it roled of the boat, then spend the money. if your like me and just want to give it a new coat get close MAKE it how You want it and forget about what other people think (not digging on anyone on this list) if it looks good to you thats all that matters..... I personally am going to return the bike to the RWB paint sceme but I am not going to woryy about it being exact tone. It will be my personal touch or interpretation af the bike.

I just finished repainting my 85 VF1000R. I got the name of the Colorite Co. from this web site. The colors matched and the service and delivery were good.
Colorite has the base coat, color coat and clear coats available. I would recommend them to anyone. I used the aerosol cans and they worked out fine.

I used a white gloss from the auto parts store and it matched perfectly, so I paid very little for the white.

I hope to show pictures of my project sometime soon. My bike looks almost new now.
