Is this 1986 VF1000R top cowl a good price?

I just bought a top cowl off eBay and was wondering if anyone thinks I paid a fair price. I did WAY overpay on shipping unless the seller has to drive 100 miles to UPS.

Here is the link:

eBay Motors: VF1000R Front fairing 1986 VF 1000R (item 230272953199 end time Jul-20-08 06:45:07 PDT)

Item number: 230272953199

I've seen new ones go for $500. The only problem is that it will cost you a good dime to have it painted. Do you have a good painter lined up yet? Do you have any estimates?

did you call SPEC II?

Regarding your top cowl I can tell you that in my own search for VFR fairings I ended up buying new Maier lowers left and right, The brochure/cataloge that they had at Chaparral (San Berdoo) had a pic of what looked like a VF top and lower fairings. It was not the VFR lower and the top looked to be the older style VF cowl with the added lowers. I paid $91 for the VFR lower copies. This is price equivalent to the Cobalt lowers but without an additional $40 to $60 tacked on for shipping. They were on the shelf and I drove away with them the same day. I could still take them back and get a refund (30 days). I have to say that they are underwhelming pieces of plastic for $91 + tax/each. They have to be fitted and drilled. They do not have the factory vent attachments either, but then the factory vents, like the factory rear cowl, are no longer available.I looked over the catalog and I think it listed the VF top cowl at $130-140, new, undrilled and unpainted. If I did not see it there I saw it on line either on the Maier site or on the SPEC II site. Check the AIR TECH site as well.

Sorry if I got to doubting regarding John's rear cowl, I thought you were mixing up vfr and vf parts. I should have more faith in other persons knowledge. I got an email from him yesterday saying he had it. He asked me how I wanted to pay for it. I suggested paypal and asked him to send pictures. Sent him pictures of my own wrecked cowl so he could compare. Have not heard from him since.

Re VF1000R top cowl

You did great. I got curious and called Maier. They claim they no longer produce any 1st/2nd gen fairings. Went back to Chaparrel, I was wrong about VF cowl, its just a picture from some discontinued fairing in their sales catalog. No body makes them not even VFRCHUCK. I did SPEC II. I think I'm right about him making aftermarket side or lower fairings for VF. His catalog says he still has some but you need to verify with him. I got confused when looking at AirTec. They make some nice racing fairings. You have to cut your own holes for street use. The VFR top and sides all go for $168 each. I think that is where I got the idea that there was still a VF top cowl available new.

The VF stuff is gold. No one makes it anymore. All the more reason for you 1st gen guys to get together and have a batch of after market copies made for yourselves and other members in the VFRWORLD group. If you ever want to do this look over the thread on the "rear cowl". I suggested doing this to get a batch of rear cowls made as a group. The area where I live is close to both SpecII and to AirTech. I could go down and ask them about making special runs of both VF and VFR 1&2 gen stuff. I looked at the Maier copies of the VFR lowers I bought, they are definitely thinner than the original parts. They are dimensionally correct but not as thick. I think Maier is around where I live as well.
