1984 VF700F front sprocket issue

Hey Guys,
Im new to this forum but I am having an issue that I hope you can help me out with. I bought a 15 tooth front sprocket (stock is 16) for my 84 VF700F and when I installed it I found the chain hits the inner cover down by the counter shaft where the seal is. I know there are a few companies selling this size sprocket for my bike so I assume it should work. Has anyone else had this problem and found a way to fix it?

check the specs on the two sprockets.

I am trying to convert my 86 to a 520 chain. In doing so I found a nice net site for investigating different sprockets. Go to the JT Sprocket site (Google "motorcycle sprockets" or maybe "JT Sprockets") they have a computerized catalogue of all their sprockets. You VF 700 takes the same front and back sprockets as my 86 vfr. The catalogue shows blue print drawings of each sprocket and gives dimensions. You need to check the dimensions of the new sprocket against your original sprocket. There are small differences that can possibly cause the clearance problems you are describing. JT also lists the different tooth counts available from them. Check to see that you have a proper replacement sprocket.

Thanks for the response. I have decided the only option is to use the standard 16 tooth front sprocket and a 48 tooth rear sprocket to get the gearing I want. The company that I purchased the chain and sprockets from is going to exchange the parts that will not work and give me ones that will. It is taking some extra leg work but oh well lesson learned.

Read the thread started by "Midias". It's about his

conversion of an 87 VFR 750 to the same 3 to 1 final drive ration that you are looking for ( 15 front to 45 rear).The front and rear sprocket on your Vf 700f and my and Midias' VFRs are the same. The problem is that there is a limited set of different front and rear sprockets in various chain sizes. You need to consider the added weight of a 530-16/48 tooth set up. I want to convert to 520 chain because it's cheaper to buy in the first place, second, it's lighter than the original 530 chain. Another senior member "Midias" ended up buying a custom made Aluminum rear sprocket in the 520 chain size. Aluminum is going to wear out before steel. The Midias' thread is at the top of the "1st and 2nd Gen Forum", it has a title like "Finally finished my 520 chain conversion". You should read through the "Midias" thread. Ironically, Midias got a front sprocket that had some sort of problem from the company he got his conversion set up from.

But I'd still like to know how your 16/48 conversion goes? Did you have to buy a custom made aluminum rear sprocket? I am very interested in the wearout if you have to use an aluminum sprocket. Let us all know how your conversion comes out. And good luck, and don't have an accident like Midias did after converting to the faster acceleration ratio.

Thanks for the input. I checked out the thread on the 520 conversion. It sounds like a great idea Im just not interested in having sprockets machined just to make things work. Thats not where I want to go with this bike. Im just trying to get something thats fun and safe to ride without spending a bunch of money on it. I had to change the chain and sprockets anyway so I figured I would pep it up with a little better gearing. Right now I am waiting on the parts and it will be probably 1-2 weeks before I receive them. Thats the major drawback to living in Hawaii it takes forever to get anything. I will keep everyone updated as things progress.

Where will you find a steel 48 tooth standard rear?

If you go back to the original 16 tooth front sprocket you will have to find a 530/48 rear sprocket. I am not claiming to know all available sources of sprockets, but I have searched the JT sprockets catalog. They don't have a stock hardened steel 530/48 (5 bolt holes centered on 110 mm). The stock 1st Gen rear 530 chain sprocket is based on the #1334 style rear sprocket. It is available in 44,45,46,47 tooth styles. I think you will have to buy a custom made 48 tooth 530 size aluminum sprocket if you intend to use the 16 tooth front.

If you look at the same JT sprocket catalog you will find that the stock Vf hardened steel front sprocket in the 530 size is #339. It comes in two tooth sizes: 15 and 16.

It seems to me that if you are not changing to a smaller chain size that your only option for a 3 to 1 final drive ratio is to buy the JT(Front) #339/15 tooth and JT(Rear) #1334/45 tooth sprockets or their equivalents. The stock Vf 700f set up is 16/44. I think it uses a 110 link chain. I would guess that you would have a similar link count, probably only a 1 or 2 link change. So you will probably need to buy a long chain (120) and a link removal tool so you can fit the chain to the new sprockets.

P.S.

I have decided to change to a 525 chain using the JT #1332 2001 CB 750 F2-1 sprocket, and a lighter/cheaper/stronger 525 chain. You might want to consider the issue of accelerated chain wear using small count front sprockets that was brought up on the Midias Thread "520 conversion installed".

Yea sprocket had the wrong number of splines on the inside but I want to also say that I was their FIRST 1986 VFR750F customer EVER and they overtightened me the new sprocket for no charge. And they charged me the same as all their other 520 kits even though they had to make a custom sprocket.

Sorry for not posting anything lately I have been super busy. The company that I am getting the parts from told me they could get a steel 48 tooth rear sprocket. So far they have not been able to get it though. Right now I am waiting and hoping they can come up with something. If they cant get the 48 tooth sprocket soon I am going to try to get a 47 tooth sprocket so I can get the bike on the road. It has been down too long.
