Need a Fuel Pump for 1983 VF750f

I need to replace the fuel pump on my bike and wanted to know what options I have. Checking on bikebandit.com the part is $135, are there any less expensive options? The pump is very simple, there is an in and an out port, and the only wiring connection it has is just two wires. Are there replacement pumps that are less expensive? Does anyone here recommend any parts websites to check out?

You could just run it as gravity feed. Search the forums plenty of good posts on it.

Cheapcycleparts.com has everything as BikeBandit but 30% cheaper. They have saved me a lot on my 83. Otherwise e-bay has a lot at times too. Very cheap.

I've tried searching for gravity feed conversions and couldnt find anything. Could you point me in the right direction?

Thanks for the info on cheapcycleparts, I just checked it out and it is 25 bucks cheaper there ($110). I take it your experience with them was good?

That bike has a fuel pump for a reason. Unless you plan on keeping the tank full at all times, don't toss the pump.

I have the same bike. By default of ownership, I stockpile many parts for it... including a couple fuel pumps. If you want one, it's yours. However, yours may just be clogged or stuck. Sometimes varnish will make the plunger stick to the bore. There's also the option of using a standard automotive fuel pump. You're looking for 660ml per minute of free flow, and static pressure no less then 4psi (9psi max. mine runs at 7psi). If it will do that, and run off of 12 volts, it will work

The bike does have a pump. I dont see much of a reason for it even considering the later years did away with the fuel pump until the bikes became fuel injected. Please read the post linked to above, many people are running gravity fed and do not need to keep the tank full or any ill effects.

I think I'm going to try gravity feed, at least for now, but I can't figure out a good way to rout the fuel line without it getting kinked or pinched.

I'll probably first try to get a length of line that will not kink and if that does not work, look into finding a 660cc/min automotive fuel pump.

FWIW the problem isn't that the pump doesn't flow, its that the lower plastic section has cracked.

Devcon makes a methacrylate adhesive that will fix that. Most auto parts stores sell it, look for "plastic welder". It's in a black tube.

The fuel pump is there not only for constant pressure, but to shut off the flow when the bike is off. this bike doesn't have a vacuum activated fuel valve like many others do.

The pump is wayyy beyond 'plastic welder,' one of the nipples is broken off and the cracks are pretty severe.

After PMing JamieDaugherty back and forth I've finally figured out the gravity feed setup, so far everything is okay, Jamie is the man as far as I'm concerned, he helped answer my foolish/ignorant questions patiently and thoroughly. I still have yet to take it for an extended ride.

I'm still confused as hell as to whether or not the bike 'should' have a fuel pump. Honda did away with it later, but many feel that it is necessary for proper flow volumes, allowing the access of reserve, facilitating the presence of a fuel filter, shutting off the gas when the bike is off, etc, etc.

FWIW the bike didn't seem to like having the tank at reserve, once I poured in a half gallon everything seemed okay. I'm fine with having to ride with a little gas in the tank at all times, though I'll admit, I'd feel that its less likely for the fuel pump to fail than for the gravity feed to get kinked/clogged/not flow properly.

Ahhh, so confused.

I have never had any problems like this. I've run all of my VF's with gravity feed for years. The reserve thing always makes me chuckle. Remember, the pump doesn't have much draw, it relies mostly on gravity to supply the fuel to it. The reserve valve just opens up a hole lower in the tank, nothing fancy. If fuel can run out of the tank it will fill the carbs with fuel. My bikes will run bone-dry with gravity feed, no problem.

Hey, if it works with gravity feed, go for it.

I found that fuel pump, but it fits a yamaha.
