new to the vfr

I inherited an 85 vfr 700 from my Dad. He rode the bike for a while, but then it got stolen. The police recovered a joke of a remaining motorcycle. It made my father sick to even look at it, so he gave it to me after about 10 years of sitting under a tarp. The carbs are sticky and i don't think the fuel pump is spitting out the correct psi or volume. My question is this: What kind of motorcycle am I going to end up with if I decide to put the time and money into this? I wouldn't mind having a bike with a passenger seat to ride two up. I have my fun, summer bike that I currently ride most of the year any ways. If any one has brought one of these back to life, I would like to hear your success story. Things like cost and difficulty (I am an automotive mechanic with a full compliment of tools) would be helpfull. Also, any concerns like engine or trans failure that exist with the bike weather it sits or not. Thanks.

Not very encouraging! Well then how about if I can find a newer bike that has been broken, are there any newer bikes that I can swap over the engine? Would that be asking for more trouble than it's worth? I have good plastic and a good frame. I like the bike and have all the time in the world. I am not in a rush to slam it together so I can ride. Any ideas?

Make a list of what you belive it is that it needs Yea I have rebuilt a couple like the one you have took a while to get parts via ebay and Sac Cyle in Sacramento. a lot of older VFR parts are getting hard to come by, if it doesn't owe you anything to start off with I'd at least see if it will run then go from there. it doesn't need a fuel pump to see if it will start yea carbs may be a bummer if left out in the cold and damp that's not good, so you might as well see if you can find a set of carbs on the good ole inter-net. once running the rest ain't so bad, just time in getting it all together.

Thanks RVFR. In typical "I know what I'm doing" attitude, I have already pulled the four carbs and in the process broke one of the carb to carb fuel tubes. I am finding out first hand about how long it is to get parts! The carbs were actually dirt free and all of the floats floated. what I didn't do was notice the bowl drains prior to removing the carbs-I could have checked fuel flow with out breaking things...oops. Once I get my parts I plan on putting the carbs back in and then checking fuel flow. I could only get the bike to idle and it would bog out (like a restricted carb or low fuel) when tried to raise rpms and then die. I could hear upper end noise (aren't all bikes noisey?) after the oil change. I didn't try to start prior to the oil change and I didn't start the bike untill I was sure the filter had filled up and I had a correct amount of oil in it. Are there known issues with these engines? I know a guy with a Magna about the same year that ordered a kit to modify oil flow because they had issues. Does this apply to this engine? The bike owes me nothing. It's just a project.

your heads will probably need the top end oiling kit, and if shot the rear shock mod too, mine did; can you say hard tail?

Ebay has some stuff for these form time to time if you look long and hard enough, good luck.
