Restoring 87 VFR - Page 2

The RZ project is waaaaayyyyyy on the back burner right now. Once my VFR is done, I need to refresh the top end on my 200. At least I have one 2smoker to ride now. :)

Regardless of what my current stable is comprised of, I'm not entirely a Yamaha nut, love anything with 2 wheels.

1st. piece completed and mounted. Good to see something back on the bike, even if it's just one component.

I wish I could find a piece of plastic in that kinda shape, mine's all cracked right around the lens on the sides...

I have 2 extra tail sections that have been plastic welded. I plan to keep the around, just in case.

This afternoon I finished everything that needs to be painted white.
All remains is the blue on the top portion of the tank and front fairing. Oh, and decals of course. It's getting closer...inch by freaking inch.

I just finished shooting the blue on the tank and front fairing yesterday. Only thing left to do is the front fender and the paint portion is done.

Last of the painting. I just need to color sand and buff everything, then throw it back on.

Looks good.....What about the front fairing??? The blue goes off the fairing. The factory paints the bike white then applies the decals and tapes 2-tone (blue) at the decal edge and sprays the bue. The blue is supposed to go along the decal edge and leave whit along the front edge of the fairing. Looks a little dark also.

You guys need to check out PPG/NEXA for your paint. I also work for them as a tech rep. I have been painting vintage bikes for 9 years now and found them to be the most reliable on color match then anybody out there. I have the formula for the white and blue. The blue I have is a base coat and not a candy. The candy is very difficult to match because the shade is off from bike to bike because of the number coats and how thick they are applied. Let me know if I can help you guys!!

If this were a factory paint job, it would look like a factory paint job. Actually, I did everything by design. I want it to stand out a little from a crowd, thus...little details to make mine, well...mine. I've never been a lemming.

Oh, and I won't be doing one of these for a long time to come, if ever.

No more faired bikes for me...give me something naked and flat black.

Oh oh i was not dissing your paint job. I was simply trying to help with some of my experience in painting vintage bikes for so long. If you like the blue to protrude past the decal off the fairing then that is your choice. I personally would like the decals to do the same but they unfortunatly dont. Gives me an idea to request afe to extent the decals a coupe inches on both ends. You are going to clear over the decals right? Make sure you blocksand the paint lines down so they disapeer and wont be seen after decal application. I agree on being "different". I am going to shave my blinkers off the upper and use mirrors off a blackbird for mine. I am having afe (cbdecals) delete the signal cut-out from the upper decals. I am also going to paint the lower part of mine blue instead of leaving white.(ala 25th vfr). Anyways just trying to shed some insight and good luck with everything. I am still gathering parts.

Looks great, not far to go it's a lot of work with full bodywork bikes.
I miss the simple ones, when my Tracy Bodied Yosh 605 Honda Four paint got ratty I redid it black in one afternoon....3 bolts the body was off (no good pics it was the 70s) captb

It's been a long time coming. She's about there. Installed the new petcock and fuel pump relay. Running a little rough, but that is to be expected. I need a carb synch now and it's done!

I'm in the same boat. No carb synch yet. I found a small coolant leak near the water pump that I have to deal with now. Once that is done I'll synch and ride.

It's been a long road, but...starting to appreciate all the effort now.

I've used a paint gun a few times over the years. I painted an old Bronco project a 4 years ago, various motorcycle frames and associated parts here and there. It's really not that hard...like anyone else might tell you, prep is the key!

I'm looking forward to having something easy the next time around...like just a gas tank, 2 side covers and a headlight bucket on my 72 CS5. Not sure I'd want to tackle anything with as much plastic as the VFR anytime soon.

Took it out for the first time yesterday. Managed a little over 100 miles for the initial shake down run. I think she's gonna be OK.

Also managed to turn 30,000 miles on her. Having not ridden a bike with an "aggressive" seating position for awhile, it'll take some getting used too again.
