Burned!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

well guys my bike cuaght fire. thankfully the lord waqs watching out for me today didnt get burned as far as i can tell. but the ol bike did get a bite in the butt

heres the damage. toasted the wiring on my r/r, my fuel pump, and my fuel pump relay, toasted my left inner fairing and melted my seat on the left side.

so if any of you part hoarders have those parts please let me know.

+1. Oddly enough, that's one of my worst motorcycling fears. Not sure how long it would take to realize the bike is on fire while moving - esp. if moving fast.

maybe this is one of those cases where the r/r & bike will sacrifice themselves to protect the 15 cent fuse..........

You need to look at all the Vf and CB bikes from the same period and earlier for similar or the same parts. I would spend a couple of afternoons looking at fische at a OEM parts seller that has a function that allows you to input a Honda Part number and get back all the honda models that utilize that part. I think one of those types of OEM part dealers is http://Hondapartspitstop.com . Anyway, I know that this sort of function exists because I have used it and will use it in the immediate future. Get the Part numbers of the things you need from the loom and start listing them in the parts look up by number. Don't put in the "name: Grizzly" Don't put in any name, just the part number and you will get back pages of all the motorcycles that used that part. If you can find the other bikes that utilize the same parts then you can hit up those salvage yards that let you pick parts. And you call around for best prices at junk yards that have what you can't find. So you might get some parts for nothing if you know what bikes to look for in an open junk yard.

I have an '86 VFR and I know that the pump relay is a POS, and that it has a wierd shutoff that interferes with the operation of the pump relay. You might just circumvent the "weird shutoff" with an earlier/other version of the pump relay. But remember that the "weird shutoff" was put on there for safety. I think mine has to do with the tach signal not showing that the bike is up and running. I.e. If you are down the tach signal essentially goes down when your hand releases the throttle, and that cuts off the fuel pump sort of thing. What it essentially adds is another relay to control a relay.

As for the actual fuel pump, it is held onto the bike with this stupid rubber damper thing that is supposed to allow the pump to swing in mid air until the rubber gets old and breaks and allows the pump to bang on the frame. It might have been the cause of the fire for all that (hot pump lead touches frame). I think you will need to buy a good used one. Try to get a good rubber swing for it too (motorcycle junk yard, ebay, internet)

Regardless, you have a nice mess to fix there. It can be done but the bike may never be right or back to where it was without a lot of work on your part. So it might be time to think of a replacement. If you buy another 1st gen VFR then you will be the guy to see for parts. You could try finding a VFR with a crumpled front end and make two bikes into one. Just make sure that the electricals work on the smashed front ended one. That has to be assumed because it was running when wrecked (or was it)? Look at the electrical parts before you buy the wreck. Which one will you keep the title clear on?

i had a fuel leak that i noticed sat. fixed it sunday morn went for a ride and was looking for a mint 86 700 for 800 bucks i heard about
well all that gas and chain lube on exhuast heated up (i hadnt made it to the car wash yet) caught fire. my stupidity. a short 2 dollar wash could have saved my all this trouble. my dumb mistake.
