Communicators Needed

Well Reg71 and I are in The Dalles Oregon and are in need of some type of bike to bike communication system. I bought a set of midland gxt-850's with and ear piece and microphone but cannot hear anything but static when using on bikes. Even off the bikes they dont sound great at all. I dont know how some people are able to use these? If anyone has a place in Oregon or Washington that has a good buy on new or even a used set it would be great for the next 1500 miles we are going to be putting on. Any help or suggestion will be great. I know Scala Q2 is the newest but limited to how many riders can hook up to. I wuld really like something useable in the FRS type or really anything at this point besides two cups and a piece of tight string.

Bump. we are staying here in OR for another day to do some much needed maintenance before we start heading back... missing bolts and such...
