5th Gen fuel tank removal for shock install

Hi Gents,

Does anyone know if the 5th gen fuel tank has a fuel tap or petcock on the underside of the tank to shut off fuel when removing the tank? A friend of mine that used to have a 5th gen seems to remember it did. Reason I am asking is that Reg described removing the tank to replace the shock. I had to remove the tank when replacing the shock on the F4i, and it does not have a fuel tap. This mandates draining the tank or very quickly putting a plug in the tank to keep the fuel from spilling all over everything. It seems that for some bikes, when they became fuel injected, that the mfrs wanted to save a few bucks, and took out the fuel shut-off tap.

Any help you can give most appreciated.

No fuel petcock. high pressure lines from the fuel pump (inside the tank) to the fuel injection system. if you disconnect the high pressure lines, have some new "crush" washers in hand for when you hook it back up.

I took mine off a while back and dont remember any petcock. I just drained the tank as far as it would go. BTW dont turn the key on before you do all this. The fuel pump side will pressurize and spew gas everywhere. Be aware.
A manual is a good thing to have.

You don't need to remove the tank to change the shock. Just loosen the front bolts, remove the rear bolts, and put a piece of wood under the rear of the tank to hold it up about 3 or 4 inches.

nah, there is no shut off. you could just do it the way bear suggested, but I ran mine pretty low then removed the lines and flipped the tank upside down and put it on the grass. No prbs...

Thank you very much for the information. That is a big help. My guess you only need to expose the bolt that holds the top of the shock in place so you can remove the nut.

What up? No install help from Kyle? You just don't get much for a thousand bucks anymore! Good Luck Buddy, it'll be a piece of cake. The Ohlins website has step by step instructions to install your shock, if it didn't come with them already. The bolt is a good place to start.

I've done this swap a bunch of times before, so I know the drill. Virtually every bike I've ever owned, other than my first VF500F, I've swapped the shock out for an aftermarket one. This will be the first time I don't have to hang the rear of the bike in the air with a tie strap around the subframe to get the shock out, which is cool.
