How long are you going to keep her...

For those of us that purchased new how do you feel about the extra $$ spent vs buying used?

My thoughts... I want to keep her forever, that is the ONLY reason I purchased new. The initial cost and upgrades won't hurt as much when it's spread over time. Forever to me means realistically 20yrs? Stating that, I don't think putting 25k a year will be the best plan. I am thinking I may put about 5k-7k a year riding when I want.

I have a 92 accord that I will leave on the side of the road one day. I purchased it for a nominal price and it gets me 27mpg. It has 330k and runs like a dream (knock on wood).

i buy my cages used, drive em till they croak.
this is my first Honda bike, I plan on applying this method here as well.
had a beater yamaha to start. dropped it like a bad habbit.

Probably for quite awhile...until a major breakdown and/or I wad it up into a little ball!

I doubt I will ever sell mine, its just too good to let go. They aint making any more. I feel the same about my Valkyrie. I may buy other bikes to rotate, but these 2 are long term keepers.

330k mile on your Accord? You da man! Cool! I have 194K on an '88 accord that I'm keepin till it blows up. 136K to go....

right now, plan is to ride the piston rings off her, but seasons change and I may need to get a ride my wife likes better. If I can swing it, it will be a second bike, but if not I'll move on and pester the Beemer R1xxxRS forum folks

I'm planning on keeping my baby forever or at least until it needs so much work that it'll be cheaper to just buy a newer bike.

And even with buying a newer bike that'll be a wait-and-see moment. I don't know of any other bikes like mine that has it all: looks, performance, practicality, comfort, low cost, etc... I may even have to buy a bike only to mod it extensively like a CBR1000RR and put helibars, better seats, better windshield so that I have a more "sport touring' oriented machine than a pure track racer.

Damn Jason 330K miles!!! I thought my 234K miles on my Nissan Sentra was pushing it! And believe it or not my Nissan still runs great and I'm gonna keep it until it blows. A small pickup truck is next so I got something to lug the bike around.

Oh, and as for buying new vs buying used, I always buy used and you can get some VERY good deals. However a BIG catch is you have to know what you are doing and that you are patient. My VFR had only 1,750 miles on it and I paid $5,000 for it. If I had bought it new it would have been at least 10 grand and I'd have to go through a break-in period. You could call it a pre-broken bike at half the cost!

But that was only after weeks of searching through craigslist and cycle-trader. I brought a friend, who is a motorcycle expert, to check out the VFR and check it for oil leaks, proper running operation, and other potential problems.

Like with cars all of mine have been used and excellent deals. The only good thing I see about buying new is that it's convenient and you can easily trade in your bike/car instead of dealing with the hassle of looking around and trying to sell your bike/car yourself.

I've had my 94 since 97 so 11 years in July. Tried to sell it a couple times (actually had a 'For Sale' sign on the windscreen for a day once) but could never go through with it. Once I start it up and hear that rumble, it's all over...

I purchased new with the intentions of having this bike for a very long time! Even if the urge to buy something new or even something old comes along, I believe that the VFR will have a home with me as long as she'll have me. My wife is fairly happy with the accommodations and we've talked of buying up next time, but the plan has always been to have the V in the garage even when we do decide to purchase again.

And as for a cage I have a 91 Accord Wagon that shows 128,000 on the odo, but I have a transmission sensor that only works 1/8 of the time so the car probably has close to 150 or 175 on it. My wife hates my car!

I'm looking at possibly a new one spring of 09. My 06 has 50k km on it now and am thinking of trading off for new before the miles get to high. I depend on mine for commuting so can't afford the chances of break down on the highway at 03:00 on the way to work. Some say I would run into difficulties selling with over 100,000 on it. So we will see.

Drove my first cage for 23 years and sold it for $150.00 more than I paid for it. Don't think I can manage that with the bike though.

I still have my truck from high school, been driving it 17+ years.

The VFR, probably be around for a long time -- but I see the day when it plays second (or 3rd) fiddle to other bikes in the garage.

Will keep it mostly for the sentimental value. It's the bike that got me on a bike again.

I'm keeping my '05 until it dies. Simple as that. My cousin works at a dealer, so can get cheap parts and even cheaper (free) labour for stuff I can't do myself. So should be able to fix almost anything that goes wrong.

I bought mine used just last week from a friend who couldn't ride anymore (back injury). So that eased my mind in the new vs. used debate, I knew the guy, knew that he took good care of it and I could trust the bike I was getting was worth it.

I will probably keep it as long as it makes economic sense too. If repairs bills from my bad riding (I am new to this riding thing) or just bad luck keep adding up, it would be time to get another bike.
