"tank protector" question

Im looking for one of those clear tank protector things that you can put onto the tank, but I want it for the seat cover for the pass seat.

this (^^^^), is kinda what Im after. I dont see one for the seat cover though.

are there other companies out there that sell these clear stick on protectors??? Is there a formal name for them??? I tried searching on tank protector, tank scratches, paint proector, etc, etc, but did not find what I was looking for.

A friend of mine works at a tint shop that also does the 3M film on cars for paint protection. He is going to do my passenger seat cover whenever I can get it over to him.

Yes, I second the SNIDERS recommendation. Just be sure to approach the application with patience and you'll be ok.

Ive been asking around & will post up what I find L8R. I guess the 3M stuff is not the best stuff out there. I guess it has to do with the adhesive, they use.

I might not be on for a few days, have stuff going on.

I wouldn’t say the 3M stuff is worse than other film products. The main difference is whether you want an adhesive backed film or not. The advantages of an adhesive film (3M is the most common) are that you can work it into tighter areas and the edges tend to less visible. It’s also thicker which makes it harder to contour and stretch. I watched the guys put it on the front of a Porsche Carrera and a Lexus while I was waiting to get my bike done and they were working it pretty hard to get it right.
The films that use sort of a static cling are easier to install and can be removed and reused. They are thinner and slightly easier to work around body lines. For an amateur installer the static cling films are usually easier work with. If I remember correctly some of the tankslapper kits come with both kinds depending on the area where the film is to be used. well shoot............ I was going to just order the tank slapper deal for my tank & get some bulk material & make a small cover for my seat cover, but I just went on their site & they have listed......

94 - 97
99 - 01

but....... no 98. so my question is, is the tank on my 98 more like the 94 -97 tank or the 99 - 01 tank??

If you use the SNIDERS product, it is a simple sheet--you cut your own piece out so it will fit...ANYTHING!
...And ACTION's feedback is very good about the difference between the two kinds of products...

Agreed, but youve not seen my cutting skillz. LOL.

think it would be safe to say that as the 98 - 01 bikes are all the same "generation" that the tanks would be close enough that the covers would be the same??

I will end up getting some of the "cut your own" stuff to do the seat cover anyway, I would rather have it look as good as possible.

I've got a tankslapper on my VFR. The piece cut to cover the rear of the tank is pretty generic. The pieces cut to cover the tank where the inner thigh contacts the tank are obviously designed to work with a preponderance of bikes...its not cut specifically for the '07 VFR.

All of that said, I'm guessing you'll be OK picking a kit not specifically designed for your bike.

The tankslapper works OK, by the way. The first application was more work than I expected, but subsequent refittings have gone very well.

Bob,

The gas tank on 98 & 99 (actually 98-01) is identical. They just have a typo on their website. I told them about it, and the guy thanked me, said they would change it, but that was about 8 + months ago.....soooooooo it looks like he forgot.
