Help with new battery

OK, I have a 1986 VFR700F and have a new battery. I am looking at my Clymer manual under Leakage Test and it says "disconnect the (-) lead and connect a voldmeter between the (-) terminal on the battery and the ground strap. It says with the key OFF there should be no voltage showing.

I do this and it measures 12+ volts. It says to check all components of the charging system for bare wires that may be shorting out which could be causing the drain.

I am afraid to hook up the new battery if there should be no voltage there.... Any obvious places to look?
