Just a little info. I have always rode Harleys on the street and rode Hondas in the woods since the early 70's. Yes I am older than some. However I resently purchaced a 98 VFR after reading about them for a year or more. I just wanted to say damn, this is a great bike that handles good and comands your attention when you roll the trottle. I still catch hell from the Harley riders I have known forever. However each one that has rode the VFR has come back with a big old smile on thier face. I must say I do enjoy this bike and find myself riding it more than the other three bikes I have.

I bet they would buy one and if not, they would certainly understand why we ride them. Seems like many HD riders just don't get it, what we ride and why we ride it.

you are so right. I was a die hard Harley rider for a long time but after I got over myself and started back riding for the reason I stared riding for in the first place. The VFR and I also have a KLR 250 for for the pure enjoyment of the ride.

They're quieter, they don't have all of that stupid chrome, and the other people who ride VFR's don't smell like the dog at the junkyard where Harley's come from. Am I sounding too harsh? It's all in good fun :) I ride Honda's and I don't shower everyday :P

You call yourself "olde" but how old is old?

I recently let my Dad (60 yrs) and uncle (early 50's) ride my VFR and neither of them thought it was very comfortable. In fact, my Dad was begging to get off within a few short miles. Of course they are accustomed to Honda Silver Wings.
I think both these guys have shorter arms than I do. Long arms allows me to sit up a little straighter so I find it very comfortable and thoroughly enjoy it.

I mention all this because I'm curious how difficult it was for you to adjust to the VFR riding position? Which Harley do you own? Any ape hangers?

I think it is awesome that you gave the VFR's enough chance to realize how fun they are to ride. Welcome!

Hey Buck, I have a 78 & 79 super glides on has drag bars and the other one has bars off a fat boy. My VFR has heli bars and I wish they were a little bit higher cause my arms are not so long. I am getting more use to the ride each time I go out. The KLR 250 is alot of fun also, my wife does not understand she thinks I'm crazy. What does she know !!!!

Welcome to the site OB. I had a Harley before my VFR and may get one again now that the prices are becoming more reasonable. I grew up riding on them with my dad so there is always a special place in my heart for them even if they are a bit outdated and loud and all the other stuff.

After reading my last post in this thread, you might see me as a staunch advocate of recycling the entire line of Harley Davidson motorcycles to become something like...... I don't know.......trash cans or something like that. I am here to confess. I actually like the Harley Davidson engineering. I can't say that I'm a fan of the more modern things that they have done but I have to say that on a scale of 1-10 of cool, there is nothing cooler that a radial engine. Whenever I here one (or multiples) fly overhead, I get chills. Perhaps its from a past life experience but I think that is a different forum altogether so I won't go in to that.
I am here to say that you can give me an iron head, flat head, knuckle, shovel, pan or whatever farm implement they are named after and I can feel the spirit of the radial. I confess that I love the sound of a good, low RPM, torque factory.
What gets me about the Harley thing is the morons riding around in the ass-less leathers, (or chaps as they are so-called) making general idiots of themselves burning out in the middle of the street and consuming large mounts of cheap beer while enacting other stereo-typical crap.
This is what bothers me.
They also don't corner well. Most of them.
I just had a thought and maybe someone out there will have an answer to it. What if someone put a 1000cc Sportster engine in an Interceptor frame? Kick start Interceptor, anyone? I am going to do the measurements and the guessing this week. If there are any donors out there that are want of ridding themselves of such contraptions, drop a line. Also, if there are any folks who have tried or seen this tell me what happened. Curiosity killed the weekend.
Lastly, please forgive me here. I was out late last night and I find it therapeutic at time to just sit a write down random thoughts in the morning. I serious about the Frankenceptor, for at least the next few hours..........S

A Sportster engine in a VFR? I think I would rather ride mine with the tires removed from the rims that ride a VFR with a paint shaker POS HD motor in it. I rather like the fact that my VFR is as smooth as silk under most conditions.

see i kind of thought the other direction. I thought how about taking a VFR engine with straight pipes and try to stuff it into some type of custom bobber style frame. keep it as light as possible have the rake and trail sensible but keep the cruiser look kind of... then race a couple harleys for fun... :)
