Hi all, I'm new and I'm planning on buying a 2000 vfr in the morning. It's one owner and has 46,000.miles, with all maintenance records. Stock pipe with nice seat and cases. Is it worth the $3100. I'm about to pay? It's never been down and looks real nice. Also, has new tires, good life left on sprockets.

Is over 40,000. miles a lot? for a vfr?

Sounds very reasonable to me. Don't sweat the mileage. I am sitting right now at about 52,000 miles on my 06 and no issues at all. Proper maintainance makes the world of difference on any vehicle you operate and you seem to have those so go through them to see what was done. The regular oil change is the most important issue.

VFRs are known to go forever, but I'd be a bit hesistant to buy a bike with that many miles. I'm probably in the minority, though. On the other hand, my 2001 has around 37k miles and is running strong. I'm aiming for 100k like Reg. Other 5th gen owners have way more miles than me on theirs, which is a testament to these bikes' longevity.

Hondas will last forever if you take care of them. It sounds like a premium bike but I think in this economy $3100 seems high for 46,000 miles. Offer him $2,500 and see what he says

While 46k mi. is nothing to sneeze at, VFRs are known to run forever - esp. if they're well-maintained. If that Y2k VFR has been taken care of, with aftermarket seat (Sargent or Corbin?), hard bags and new tires it's worth $3100 IMO.

BTW, I'm just shy of 40k mi. on my '04 this week, with no plans of trading/selling it anytime soon.

you're welcome. I agree with whomever said to offer $2500 then see what they say. If they won't budge, wait a week and see if they'll meet you in the middle. The VFR is a good bike. I have over 70000 miles on my 98 and I pretty much only do regular maintenance. I paid $3750 for my 98 with 35000 miles a few years back and I don't hesitate to jump on it and go for days.

oh, I forgot to mention. the yellow will cost you a bit more if you have to replace plastics, but they sure are sharp looking...

Thanks for the welcome! I've been looking for some time and I've found some real duds. This bike looks good but it's the owner thats cool.

I've found some great deals in the $1500. range but the folks selling them were shady or the bike was hammered.

I know little about the Honda V4, other than I wet myself when I first saw one in a CycleWorld back in the 80's

I've had dozens of bikes from Honda 450 hawks to CBR1100xx's and many Kawasaki's and Suzuki's in between.

It's easy for me to take a look and listen to any i4 and know whats up.

But the V4 sounds funny(and I like it!).

Agreed. the Yellow paint is pearl-ized. multi coat process. so if it falls over, it'll cost a bit more to get it put back in shape.

somewhere around here i have an article that talks about a courier in London who put 400,000 miles on a VFR then had the heads done & put ANOTHER 400,000 miles on it!!.
the gear griven cam assembly has fewer moving parts than a chain & cam chain tensioner assembly & will go for quite a while.

40,000 is probably just getting warm......

Now that I've thought about it a little more, I think $3100 is a good price for that bike based on the description you provided (if you can get it for less, even better). If I were going to sell my bike right now I'd be asking for more (don't know if I'd get it, though). The only reason I'd be a bit hesitant to buy it, is because you don't know how the bike was maintained, other than the owner's word. However, as long as he changed the oil routinely, all should be good with the motor. With 5th gens getting older, high mileage is to be expected, so if you want one, you may have to bite the high-mileage bullet.

Sounds good to me as well..... I had over 100k on my 99' with no problems..... My 08' I've had just over 7 months with close to 16k..... You should be good for 150/200k .... Just keep changing the oil and filter....
