VFR horsepower
I am on the verge of becoming a VFR owner. I rode a 93 and loved it. I wanted to find somewhere a list of the power ratings as the different motors developed over the years. My interest is in the pre Vtec motors.
The 93 had good power, but curiosity has me wanting to know more before I make a plunge. Any links to this information would be appreciated. Also a list of the upgrades from model year to the next. Thanks in advance. Tomato man

Last time I had my 97 on a dyno around two years ago I had 95 and some spare change with around 100,000 miles and no motor work since new...not even a valve adjust.

Specs for a 93 can be found in the third generation section. The link below will take you to the main Specs page.

I have a strong interst in the VFR after riding a '93. I currently ride the 1993GTS 1000 Yamaha with center hub steering abd the Genesis 20 valve fuel injected motor. Powerful long legged beast. Incredible gas mileage even at high speed. High 40's to low 50's. I think the VFR brakes are probably better because of the weight factor.
My question is ....who out there has owned several VFRs including the 750 and the 800 versions? I would appreciate some feedback from someone who has lived with them both and can offer direct comparisons..likes and dislikes. I missed out on the low mileage 98 on ebay in Tenn. There was some screw up on the seller's part and the auction was cancelled, though. He set his reserve at $4500. I was hoping that I might get it for $4000 but he wanted his price and will likely get it, because someone was pushing up the bids. I think I could live with a nice low mileage 750 in nice condition if I could find one closer to Pittsburgh at a decent price. ANy leads would be appreciated. I'm hoping for the red version. If you're basing the purchase on HP, you're probably looking at the wrong bike. The VFR is about the total package.
I've only owned a 2000. I've wanted a VFR since I was 12 years old when I rode a 1984 VF500 Interceptor that belonged to a friends older brother. I've been hooked on Honda V4's ever since. I've thrown a leg over a: 1984 VF500 1986 VFR1000 1986 Sabre 1100 1990 VFR750 1991 VFR750 (These in white or red with white wheels are some of the best looking bikes on the planet) 1993 VFR750 1996 VFR750 1999 VFR800 2000 Magna 2000 VFR800 2003 VFR800 2005 VFR800 2006 VFR800 The 2000 I now own is far and away my favorite. It has about 97 RWHP. It has the "total package" better than ANY bike in the world. I believe the 2000-2001's are better than the current bikes. The current bikes have around 100RWHP. Not much to worry about there. KC-10 FE out...

well..
I have both a 1990, and a 2000, so I guess I can comment. Up front, I have to admit the 1990 has been modified with a rebuilt CBR600F3 front end, and wears a works performance race shock in the rear. (It's my track bike).
Moving them around the garage, the '90 feels heavier than the 2000. I don't think it actually is. On the road, the '90 feels smaller, and more tossable than the 2000. The '90 throws a whole bunch of engine heat out, much more than the 2000. Like, I can feel the heat thru my aerostich. The 2K has more power, and in my case more vibration (I'm sure I need a TB sync.) Both are very capable bikes, but with the suspension changes, the '90 is more flickable. I think stock for stock, the 2K would have better brakes (along with the linked setup), but the F3 with SS stops harder than anything I've had. Over all the '90 does not feel like a 16 year old machine. It feels pretty fresh. '90 Likes Red/white wheels Feels more compact, lighter and slightly more maneuverable than my 2000, (which needs new rubber) Cheap '90 dislikes HEAT!!! Mirrors 2000 likes FI (no choke) Stable fast Linked Brakes 2000 dislikes none really I will at some point update the suspension on the 2000 to match the '90. Feel free to ask specific questions... and, if you wait till next spring, I might be able to contrast an '86VFR 700 as well.... And, those are my toe sliders sparking, not the pegs --jeff |

Side sitting "bus driver",
Thanks for your inputs! Horsepower is not the main issue. 100 Hp is probably more than anyone REALLY needs. Torque is good on the VFR and the motor is sweet. I was thinking a 1998 might be a good one, but I will defer to your experience and give more thought to a 2000. I see you have a love for riding the SOuthern ridges. A stop in Blowing Rock NC might be a treat for you, We gather there late to mid May for a weekend ride and perusal of fine motorcycles. Lots of old Brits arrive, We gather at the Blowing Rock Inn. Great time. Maybe you can join us. USAF 1969-1973 335th TAC FTR SQ F4's Inertial NAV

Dito to the abve with an added note, rode the 2000-01 had the chance to buy one, tried on the 4g and it was a no brainer when looking at costs as well. bought what I have a 97, lighter feel thou the specs say different KN filter with staintune put down 103 to the ground, my last 96 model VFR with just the staintune laid down 97.5hp. I have race tech front redo now looking at a WP rear shock to complete the up grades. Yes agree total package the VFR has, and that motor still surprizes 1000cc bikes. hard to beat the smiles per mile you get with the VFR.
