I bought a used 1986 VF500F back in 1988. Rode for a year or so and hung it up to have a family (wife and 4 kids).
Fast forward 20 years...I was surfing and landed on advrider with pictures of adventures, travel and food and something in me said (in Darth Vader voice) "R..I..D..E...". I called my brother whom I gave the bike to and ask him that since he wasn't using it, I'd like to ride again. I wanted to use it temporary until I get another bike (may be a KLR?).
Since it's been 20 years, I took the MSF class here in Houston and have been happily riding my VF500F to work for the last few weeks. The more I ride the VF, the more I want to keep it. I don't think a dual sport can ride as nice as the VF in Houston traffic (mix of highway and surface streets). That brought me here we I like to know more about the VF500F and learn more from other VF owners.
While dual sport adventure biking is what I think I want, I really like the speed of my bike now. Now I understand why everyone needs two bikes.
I do have some questions already so I will post those in the Mechanics Garage section. Thanks
Here is a picture of my bike:

The bike looks nice. I wish I was in Houston - I rode in to work this morning and it was 38 degrees! By the time I finished my 60 mile one-way it had warmed up to a toasty 51!!
The VFR makes a great commuter bike. But just like golf clubs and fishin' poles, each new piece of equipment leads to wanting more new equipment!

Welcome to the brotherhood! Nice looking bike.

Welcome aboard! Great looking bike! How many miles does she have on her?

Howdy! Former Houstonian here. I can't envision riding 59 or 45 in rush hour being fun. Other than that, great city to ride in. Year round season doesn't hurt either.
Enjoy.

Thank you everyone for the warm welcome.
Houston weather was so hot!!! Unless you are moving, you are just burning up sitting at the red light. It just got nice this past week
When I bought the bike in 88, it has about 2600 miles. When I got it back a few weeks ago, it has 7200 miles. Today it's at 8000.
I was lucky that I go to work past rush hours and actually against rush hours. I head away (out) from Houston to work and back into Houston to go home. I smile at the people fighting traffic in the other direction. We can't split lanes in Texas but we can ride in the HOV lane![]()
It is fun if you have a system! ThE object of the game is to STAY OFF of those two hiways during that time. I ride around 100 mile round trip to/from work, but because of my schedule, only on time per day in rush hour... Kinda have to know what to expect. Welcome to the site, partyofone! In north houston, Champions area.
+1 HOV FTW!!!

The bike looks pretty cherry and it only has 8000 miles on it? If your brother is not riding it much what is keeping you from getting it back permanently from him? I would love to have a 1st Gen with low miles on it.

Hey ya'll. Sams Boat in the Woodlands (off the 45) is having a Bike night tonight and I was just wondering if any fellow VFRW people would be going there tonight. Starts @6 ends at 9.

Hello and welcome, I'm East of Houston a little. Good to see more VFR riders in and around Houston, we need to get together sometime, kick tires and ride to lunch/dinner.
Cheers, Tom
