Helibar install

the install looks pretty straight forward. it mentions something about having to cut a tab by the master cylinder etc. but my question is i've never taken the grips off a vfr. every other bike i've owned they're pretty glued on there. do vfr grips come off easily or will i need to get new one's for the helibars?

i didnt have any problem getting mine off. i just grabbed the inner part and and pulled them off turning them inside out. however i don't know if they were original.

Or put a little WD-40 on a long thin screw driver, slip screw drive unter grip and rotate screw driver around the inside of the grip and then slip right off. The WD-40 won't effect the adhesion of the grip when reinstalled.

I just use soapy water and twist back and forth. You can use this also to install if necessary, once it dries there's no sliding. For the brake tab I used a short handheld hacksaw.

I peeled the grip back, it took a little patience but it came of. I used old fashioned spit to get it back on. As far as the tabs on the master cylinder, I used a dremil and made a nice clean cut. I also used lots of towels to keep from scratching the bike. Make sure the bars don't hit the tank.

You'll have fun on the throttle side when trying to re-install the throttle cables. Maybe it was just me and there's a really easy way to re-install those things, but I couldn't find it. I ended up lifting the tank and disconnecting the cables at the throttle body, then re-installing the cables at the grip, then reconnecting the cables at the throttle body. Wish I had figured that out sooner. Other than that though, pretty straightforward install. As someone else said, spray some soapy water on a thin long screwdriver, slip the screwdriver all the way in, underneath the grip, and spray soapy water into the opening while rotating the screwdriver. The rotation of the screwdriver will gently walk it along the entire circumference of the handlebar, and then the soapy water will allow you to pull the grip off. Some soapy water on the inside of the grip and on the handlebars will also facilitate a smooth re-install, and when dry, your grips won't rotate. I love the new helibars, they made quite a difference.

I put on throttle grip before I installed the heli bar on the fork tube. Maybe you had less cable than I did?

I still wonder if I really had to cut the tab off the brake lever?

I just put helibars on yesterday. I found the hardest thing to do is removing the bar weights. Had to pull and twist and pull and twist. They were buggers. You shouldn't have to take your throttle cables off. Just remove the 2 screws holding it together and then get the bottom portion which has a tab holding it in place on the bar to release. Now you can just slide the throttle body off one bar and onto the new heli. It took me about 1.5 hrs to change bars. I work with tools everyday so this was easy.

I put Helibars on about eight months ago. I routed the cables as instructed. To this day, I have never been able to get the throttle to return quickly, and most of the time not at all. Anyone have any ideas on how to fix this?

Yes, I had the same problem. It is all about the end cap. Just take it off and see if the throttle snaps back. You just have to keep adjusting it if that is the problem

Mine works just fine after the re rout. Just as snappy back as before the change.
