Lic plate mod for 5th Gen

Here is the plate mod that I did to my 1998. I drilled two 1 1/8" holes directly under the lamps in the light & then used 5 minute epoxy to glue on a clear welding mask lense. it sealed up nice & its VERY clean looking.

I dont really like how the fender does not follow the plastic so I think Im going to trim it from the reflector back to the tag & make it follow the line of the plastic. that will look a lot better.

Hope Ive made some contribution to the VFR community.

I trimmed the black plastic even with the body then found the ugly part of the inner tool box area showed! I looked at it for a while then decided to move the refletors back to cover it up. I"ll post some pics later. Lighter.

I like the light access. I have trimmed the tail of mine too, but nothing with the light so far.

that was my apprehension. I did not want to cut it & then find out that it looked bad. I figured I could cut more off if I did not like it. I was kinda hoping I could turn that box upside down, but it looks like there is some kind of electronics in it so....................

I figured that if I cut it to follow the plastic, I would have to look up & under to see that box hanging down & 95% of folks would not see it.

Hey, if you are interested, you should hook up with us SD folks on some of our local rides! What area of SD are you in? I am around Clairemont/PB.

I also trimmed the tail. As for the light, I actually removed the factory tag light from mine and soldered the harness to individual LEDs. I then inserted the LEDs into a yellow lego (Cut out two of the heads from the lego to insert the LEDs) and epoxied it to the underside of my rear light. It actually turned out really well and you'd never know it was a lego unless you inspected it very closely!!! I'll try to get some photos posted after I get back to Bama from this training trip to Temecula. Just thought I'd share my experience.

Looks good! I had to try the same on my '00. I didn't want to go too far at first and wanted to keep the original plate light and mount, so I didn't take quite as much off and moved the entire assembly upward. I may want to go the same route as you but I might look for some type of led light bar to mount at the top to cut more off and get rid of the ugly light. I just think that it opens the back end up nicely.

Well done. Not one for alot of "sqiddly" mods, but I love the clean, uncluttered look of the bobbed fender / relocated tag. The bike looks so much better. I'm gonna try the same surgery on my own '98 over the weekend. Wish me luck.

Well it wasn't done over the weekend because I added a Staintune can and then got the idea to strip and polish the rims, which is still a work in progress. Anyhow, here's a pic of the end result, docked tail and all. I hacked off most of the plastic leaving just enough to attach the tag frame. Haven't reinstalled the tag light yet because the OEM is ugly as hell. I do like Shamrock's YZF600/750 tag light modification though (post #14), which is nice and subtle.

Here's my hack job. I left some plastic to support the plate, trying to follow the lines of the tail cowl. We have bigger plates to deal with up here... I wired up a mini-light from the existing connectors.

I don't have any pics handy, but I chopped EVERYTHING off the back with the exception of about 1/2" of plastic, then installed four of DEI's "Lite N Boltz" to completely illuminate the plate.

I simply trimmed around the edges and supported the tag with a similar size of .064 aluminum.
The tag light is from a Yamaha YZF 600/750 purchased from a salvage yard.
