Who manufacturers the oil filter for Honda???

After spending $14+ at the stealership last weak for my oil filter, I began to wonder..... Who does Honda farm out to manufacturer its oil filters? I know that we could argue at great length about quality, but what is comparable to the Honda filter at a reasonable price? My god, the filter for my Harley at the stealership is only $8.95!!!!

The WalMart brand is the way to go (unless you don't shop there). Slightly longer filter means more filtration, and you can get your synthetic oil there too.

All oil filters are not created equal. Some filters have so much filter media that it inhibits the flow of oil when cold which requires the activation of the bypass valve to allow oil through to lube the engine on cold starts. Only issue with this is that some filtes require a higher PSI to open the valve than the OEM filter from Honda. While the higher PSI will be reached and oil will flow, the OEM filter's valve will open quicker to let oil flow during the start. This is not to say there aren't other quality filters on the market, there are. I am just saying do your research before you switch off of the OEM.

Its made by Filtech, they are the same as the ones you can find at the Triumph dealers as well for the Daytona 675. If you want to buy aftermarket you can run a Nissan oil filter pn# 15208-65F0C for $5-6 or any equal sized filter with thread M20 x 1.5mm which is pretty standard for many Nissan cars. Look around for oil filters that fit the Nissan 350Z, they are the same size, design, and thread specs. Sorry for the old thread bump but i figured i'd to add this this thread.

No apologies necessary, VR. Knowledge is power. I just paid $13.00 today at the dealership for an oil filter (ok, ok, it was only $12.98, but what's 2 cents amongst friends? ;) ) and I about had an attack. It's outrageous, in my opinion, to reward your loyal customers by charging them exorbitant prices for such common items. I will definitely look elsewhere next time.

You are correct, Fram (Allied Signal) is still making oil filter for Honda's automotive side, but their motorcycle side is Filtech.

an oil filter is just as important then what type of oil you use. as metioned earlier some do not filter out as much and the valve doesn't open as soon or as often.. I read an oil filter comparision (google it)for cars and found out the mobil one filter is a better way to go; fram are junk use plastic parts I would not put a car filter on a motorcycle thread size may be the same but the pressure is different..royal purple is an awesome filter as well 15 dollars, mobil1 13dollars, you really think a 4.95 fram is as good?? next time you are bored look at them in auto parts store and compare the mobil one is all steel better valve and rubber seal is heavier.. just better from my reasearch and from comparing them on different cars..hope this helped but people spend up to 12 a quart on oil then use a cheap filter

I bought 1 OEM Honda filter for the first oil change, probably never again. $14 for a oil filter is a rip off. Next time im running some Nissan oil filters for $5 they have then in short and long versions. On a side note, i wonder why VFR's didnt come with OEM magnetic drain plugs? My Suzuki comes with it.... I guess time to buy one of those too.

On a side note, i have been hearing very good review's about Honda of Japan oil filters called HAMP filters. I might give these a try since they are really cheap $8~ Japanese oil filters with good filtering, lots of pleats and made to work specifically with VTEC engines. I ordered some today, ill let you guys know how they turn out when i get them in tomorrow..

Oh man what a topic, I too thought the OEM price is a bit out of line, so I started doing some research and came up with a WIX filters being about as good as you can get, especially for the money, this one was $7.99 Being WIX also got their start making Hydraulic filters for a many important machines, made sense they knew a thing or two. Just so happened I tripped over these via getting my Amsoil at all places LOL at a rental equipment establishment. Since they go through a lot of oil and filters, it made sense to get their feelings on the subject. and wouldn't you know, Wix #51358 is just the ticket. Funny on the box it has a label saying #1 filter for Nascar.. Oh brother, now there's a reason to buy it huh? NOT!!!

When i changed my oil a couple of weeks ago, there was alot of sediment on the bottom of the drain pan, it looked like black sand or dust. Is this the clutch material? If so, why is there soo much of it??? Ive had small amount of it come out of my 750 before but it was like really little, on the VFR it looks like the whole bottom of the drain pan was covered in it.

Ok i got in the HAMP filters today, they are EXACTLY like the factory Honda Motorcycle filter with the exception of its height and obvious color (its a larger version of the OEM Honda filter) the material color and texture looks to be the same, as well as the support screen.

Fram is crap, a poorly constructed filter with no emphasis on quality. On a side note buying that Honda car dealer filter is no different but the cost, the Honda parts dist center switched the Filtech made ones for the shitty Fram ones, only difference is its painted blue. Do yourself a favor and buy something with some emphasis on quality. This is why the Hamp filters are famous around the Honda crowds because its a high quality filter thats far better then OEM (because its not Fram) and is built for good filtration. The HAMP filter is exactly the same as the Honda bike dealer ones (same maker) only difference is the price and its slightly longer (good thing more sq in surface area).

I find that oil and oil filters are cheap compared to buying a new engine! I know that if I buy a honda oil filter and oil for my bike I wont have any problems .
My ride gives me lots of pleasure and If I have to spend an extra $20.00 a season to buy genuine parts I am ok with that. If I ever bought a porsche I wouldent buy my oil and filter from walmart!!!
