I was helping a friend who wanted a quieter, higher pitched exhaust, instead of the loud low pitched systems. (We're old, and already had our straight pipe BSA Lightnings in the sixtiesand virtually open megaphones and un-silenced expansion chambers in the seventies)
I cut the rear shell, and pulled the rear tip with the baffle can attached, and only cut off the far (inner, or forward) end off the baffle can, which exposed the small pipes (that exit at the back) directly to all the exhaust gases. Many wouldn't like it because the exhaust is pitched higher, but it works for us. I'm only passable with mig, so the reweld was "gorilla" welds. (strong and ugly) I liked it and did mine that way too.![]()
I'd love to see what you did.

It's way too late for pictures, they're both back on the road.
If you look at the pictures of the other mods, you'll see that all the rest cut at the very tail end, and either completely removed the baffles, or cut the connection of the small pipes exiting the muffler and left the can volume to create a low pitched resonance. Too close to Harley noises for my taste![]()
I left the small pipes intact, cut the front facing portion off the baffle can, thus disabling the first two silencing switchbacks, and reducing only about half of the silencing.![]()
They're closest in sound character to Staintunes, a third quieter, and without the low pitched component.![]()
There was a poster who said he liked the sound when decellerating a stock exhaust from high rpm. It's much like that, and halfway in volume between the other gut jobs and stock.
Has some of the character of seventies Porsche silenced two liter Carrera race motors at ten grand. (there was once a class that required silencing) They made the most incredible high pitched raspy bark
I didn't quite manage that, but came close.
I was talking to an engineer, and explained what I did, and he said that cutting off the inner part of the can and exposing the two smaller pipes rather than making the exhaust flow through the single larger pipe actually provided more cross section for flow than the single pipe, and that the actual flow was probably not significantly different that if I had removed the entire can, and welded the cap alone back on.
Hmmm..... stumbled onto what I wanted by blind luck.
