dropped valve, knee deep and aint lookin back!!

HELLO!! i just recently bought a 1985 vf500 interceptor.... rode it a little and the valves wer gettin noist and the engine did not sound right so in the process of checking the valves i noticed one of the front drivers side ex. valves was nowhere to be found! [after i found the adj. screw and jam nut that fell on the ground while removing the valve cover] So THEN i tore the engine out, pulled the heads to find that the keeps slid off the valve stem dropped the valve onto the piston where it broke the valve head off and bent the stem, lodging the stem in the guide and pounding the valve head into the ex. seat. all with minimal damage to the piston and none to the cyl.!!! SOOOOOOO.. i was wondering if there are any eperianced mechanics/ engine builders that have some good advice tips or just wanna hear about my progress or funny skrew ups

    Got your back

You sound like you are not afraid of your project so I say GO FOR IT!A little hunting and you should find what you need to put it back together and have a really fun bike.I have been looking for one with a blown engine myself, just need a clean one, not willing to do the body work hunt but an engine would be a fun winter time project.GOOD LUCK!oops forgot...where are the pics?

haha yeah i have heard or ONE and i highly doubt it happened from poor manufacturing... most likely a bad mechanic work.

Do not listen to Squirrel.....he is a little bitter about the lack of hugs earlier in life.....post a list of what is needed to repair and I am sure we can come up with what you need.

If you could make a list of where you got your parts I would consider it a favor.I am looking for a clean 500 with a bad engine myself for a project/fun ass bike.

got to work on my engine a little today, i have realised working on this piece of machinery that even though it is small i think it has more parts than a v8 big block.. but anyway.. got everything off the case hopefully organized so i can remember how to put it back together... split the case eventually and stopped there. so far all the internals are looking promising! bearings dont apear to be too worn have not measured anything yet though. i was surprised how clean the inside of this engine is no black or sludge!! i gues anything would seem clean copared to diesel engines though? :-/
