I recently decided to do some cosmetic work on the vfr and thought that a relocation of the slip-on would clean up the look a little. I've seen some of the V4s in the picture gallery with the exaust on the left side. I've tried looking for the kits to do that to my bike but was told those exaust set ups were all custom. (outta my price range) So, I chopped my exaust just a little and added a chromed tip I found at the local Autozone. The sound is unbelievable. When I tried to show off my work, I was told I was possibly causing damage to the engine. Something about not having the propper compression. I've been riding it like this for a week now and don't notice any difference other then the sound. At first it would not stay running when i tried to start it. But after adjusting the idle up between 1200-1500rpm. it stay running. If this is a bad thing, please let me know. Any feed back is appreciated.

You should not be hurting compression any. You would be, like stephon said, reducing the back pressure. Some will say less back pressure is good and some say not and that it will diminish (somewhat) overall power. It might change how the bike runs and you might need to rejet the carbs.

Just kidding. Don't rejet your carbs just yet. But lower back pressure should make it faster because its not bogged down with exhaust. As an example, my full size blazer was bogged down when I would try and drive it thru the mountains. It has a single exhaust that was on a narrow pipe that ran out the back. I removed the exhaust put on headers and a 3" pipe. It removed all the back pressure and I am able to run the speed limit on the same roads. It will just make it louder is all.
I would like to see a pic. I'm also thinking of doing some mods to get rid of the canister in the middle and just have strait pipes to the mufflers. anyone know if that will hurt performance any?

So, you wanna sound like a Harley puke with loud for no reason pipes?
The only damage you will do is either it will be lean from the reduced back pressure, or, you will warp valves from the cold air running up through the exhaust when you shut it down. (That is why you see the drag guys putting those balls over the headers when they shut down. It's not to keep stuff out.)
I bet that's loud as hell...
I say cut them the only down side if you want to call them that is louder exhaust noise. You may want to weld up some headers yourself or have a shop do it if you can't find the right ones. The used bike I bought came with headers and some silencer type mufflers that work so-so. But if you cut them off you should get a pipe to at least clamp on to bring them out back. But then again you could just have them turn down and dump on the ground. I really beleave it wouldn't hurt your bike. But if what gatekeeper says about the valves is true get some balls and you'll be fine.

That's gonna reduce back pressure some. You will gain some grunt down low but the trade off is loss of grunt up top. And it will be loud. lol. I just took off a Hedman dual exhaust tip (with built in resonators) to see if it had better clearance than the CBR muffler I had. It was better, but I still had issues with clearance. It was loud, though it did sound great. I felt it had a bit more power off the bottom thru the mid range and lost some on top. If your reasoning for this is to show of the wheel more, you might want to consider a high pipe. Get one for a 94 - 97 model and have and exhaust shop make the mid pipe, or, also get some headers for a 94 (I think they will bolt up) as well as the high pipe and mount it all up. Either way you decide, it's all about what you want to do. The final decision is yours. As for looks, it doesn't look too bad to me. Kinda like the shorty pipe on some the the gixxers.
I thought about the high pipe but wasn't sure if having the heat from the pipe so close the plastics (near the seat) was a good idea. Also, I ride my 2 girls ( 13 & 10) and thought the heat from the pipe may be too hot for any passengers. For me this would be alot of guess work. I don't know much as far as the mechanics of the vfr but, am learning and asking those who do know. So, the feed back I receive is very important to me. Thanks.

Whoa there. This is the sweet rumble my V4 was meant to sound like. It's a bit louder but nowhere near what a Hardly sounds like. What balls? I'm not sure what you're referring to. And also, is it that any air will warp valves or just cold air? What I'm saying is I live in Florida and it's not very cold here. So, is it any air cooler than the exaust or any air?
