Lame headlamp bulb question
Sorry for the lame question but:
I just picked up a lovely '01 this past weekend and I haven't gotten a service manual yet so please forgive such a basic question: One of my lowbeams is out. I got a bulb but I can seem to pull the old one out. On a 2001, do I need to remove any of the bodywork to change the bulb? Is there some way secret way to pull the old bulb out of it's mount. I tried gently tugging on the bulb mount and I tried pulling back the rubber surround but I'm not having any luck. It's a pretty tight area and I don't want to manhandle it. Thanks! |

If it's an H4 bulb like in my '96, there's a lame spring clip that holds the bulb in. A H4 blub has a three locating tabs on the metal seat, and dual filaments. Google it if you need a picture to go along with the description.
1.) Pull the wiring harness/connector off the bulb. Some require you to squeeze both sides of the connector at 3 and 9 o'clock. 2.) Remove the rubber piece from the headlight housing from behind. 3.) Locate the spring clip, and push it towards the base of the bulb/towards the front of the bike, and then either up or down. You should feel it disengage the clip and swing out of the way. Then remove the blown bulb. 4.) Installation is the reverse of removal. (I love that phrase.) ![]() |

BTW- I really DO love Vermont. My wife and I eloped up there and one day plan to leave the heat and congestion of MD for VT. |

Glad I could help.
VT's great, I've been here for 27 years. If you and your VFR make it up this way, let me know... I can show you my favorite twisties!!! As far as moving from MD to VT - you'll be unpleasantly surprised how expensive it is to live here... Most 3 BR/2 BA homes are $250k+... And they're not getting any cheaper. ![]() |

As for the VT home prices, that is a PLEASANT surprise! If you couldn't tell from my screen name I'm a Real Estate Agent. That said, in my neighborhood outside Baltimore an eighty year-old 3BR 2BA that needs some updates runs $500K. Add that to the fact that it is 88ºF today (no joke). Understand why I want to leave for greener pastures (and mountains). |
