Deep Throaty Exhaust From Your '02-05' Exhaust
Thinking of spending $800-$100 on an exhaust? Do you want deeper, throatier sound; but not worried about marginal hp gains? (I feel like a salesman) The not-so-saleman fact is this mod. should cost you a about 2 hrs. and maybe a few bucks.
I got this mod. from that "other" VFR forum and it's great. Simply put; cut the back end of the stock exhaust. Not the shiny part. :o Take the heat shields off; cut (I used a sawz-all) rear of the weld that holds the cap on. Slice it straight with the weld. Replace the heat shields and your done! The heat shields will hide all evidence of your guilty audible pleasure. Some guys didn't cut the back off, but just drilled (2) 1"-1 1/2" holes in the back of the pipe to open it up. A few guys cut the pipe open and gutted the entire thing. I imagine the results are very similar. Save the bucks for a few nice weekends with your buddies and giggle at the inexpensive thunder you just obtained. Cheers! Hear you on the road.

I have the '05 with less than 200 miles on it so I didn't have the baseline to compare the differences in power. I think the Catalytic converter is so restrictive that power gains or losses are minor.

I 've been wanting to throw some Staintunes on my 02 VFR for some time now but can't get passed the cost. I live in Chino Hills and like running down to Ortega Hwy. on Sunday mornings when I can. I've been up to Santa Paula and Ojai area but not further north to Oxnard, your neck of the woods.Anyways I've considered the cut and yank procees you mentioned above but don't feel comfortable enough trying it. You ever ride further south Maybe I can meet up with you sometime and check out how it looks and you can walk me through the process a bit more in detail. Sure would like to save that $$$$!

![]() Newbie here. Besides the mushy suspension, the lack of volume of my (new to me) '03 VFR exhaust is really bugging me. It's just too damn quiet. I even went out and bought a quieter helmet in hopes of being able to hear the thing better. Whenever I reach speeds of 40 mph or greater, I can barely hear the motor. I noticed there's a couple of allen screws on the bottom inside of the mufflers. Is there a baffle inside there that can be removed? I don't want to buy any aftermarket system but sure would like the thing to be loud enough to hear when I'm riding the thing at speed. Plus, IMHO, louder bikes do get other drivers' attention. Is there an easy fix for this? |

After this weekend hearing Reg71's bike,.... and riding next to my old 750 with its Yosh pipe,.... i've got to do something with my stock pipes ! Looks like im gonna cut my mufflers open and gut'em.... I'll post up some progress pics. Time for bed now....

Got the ends cut-off last nite, melted(torched) out the exit pipes, and removed the inner tip that was still inside the endcap. Now even the outlet in the muffler is larger as well.

Interesting project Tori, you've got me thinking about doing this myself. Do you run a PC III USB? I'm curious if you need to adjust the mapping at all after this modification.

Nope, aside from this little mod, my bike is all stock. Im only after the sound....
I will have it back together tonite, and will post up a video/sound clip of before and after. |

Thanks for the pics, I've always wondered what the insides looked like. I'm with you I'm after the sound also.
What exactly did you remove if anything? Can the insides be gutted anymore? It looks like the 2 smaller holes in the inside have been torched, what exactly happened there?

Yes, you could take out more, but the concensus is it would be extremely loud. Thats why i stopped where i did.
I torched out the two small tubes that run to the outlet. I tried using a grinder with a small wheel, but it was next to impossible so i chose the torch. It looks like hell because whatever material those pipes are made from doesnt cut well with heat. As soon as you apply heat, they just melt. You didn't even have to use the oxygen. Anyway, whats left wont interfere with flow. I was gonna do a diagram tonite in photoshop to show how these mufflers work so everyone can see what they are doing and why. |

Okay,....... the mod is done. Bike back together. Sounds good, not as loud as i was expecting or wanted, but it does sound nice. Iv've made a quick video with before and after pics and sounds.

I did something similar to mine. Instead of cutting straight thru, I cut the weld with a die grinder and pulled the whole baffle out. I then removed the fiberglass packing and slapped them back in and used the end caps to hold them in. It was a little too loud for me, so I used so JB weld stick to close some of the gap on the top of the pipes and "tuned" the sound with that. I know it's not exactly a "professional" way to do it, but it worked and it sounds great.

Question
Does it look like you can cut the mufflers in the middle, where the two triangular canisters meet? That way the cut and weld are hidden under the seat?
I would like to make the same change but was looking at cutting the mufflers in the middle. Jeff |

You could cut it there, but where i cut it, the weld is totally covered by the endcap. Nothing is visible.
Now that i have ridden a bit with it, its pleanty loud. |

I cut mine on the end, like Tori did. Then grab the two tubes that once went through the end cap, and pull on them with visegrips. The baffle comes right out! Then weld the end cap back on. Sounds almost like the bike does without any exhaust!

Lost a little low end torque. Just a hair off idle or so. Not very noticeable. I had 10,000 miles on the bike before i gutted the exhaust. Now have about another 6,000 on the gutted exhaust. No ill effect to mileage. Still getting 45-50mpg. Now I have some smaller, glass-pack style tips, still runs the same and looks a little nicer than the big stock cans. About 40% of my riding is with a passenger, bike has plenty of go and acceleration. I would recommend the mod, if looking for a more aggressive sound.
