2006 - Zero Gravity Sport Touring W/S Install

Well, I've had my '06 VFR for about 3 weeks (just over 600 miles so far), and thought it was about time to start some mods.....don't know what took me so long....

I thought a Zero Gravity wind shield (sport touring model) would be a good place to start. I chose the clear model, but in hind sight, I think I would go with at least the light smoke one next time around.

The install was VERY easy - 4 screws is as complicated as it gets.

The only complaint I have with the clear model is that there is no "smoked" section at the bottom, to cover the unfinished area where the black instrument housing meets the white fairing. The factory w/s has a blacked out area that covers this. I used some semi-flat black krylon paint on the inside of the windshield to attempt to cover this area. If I get another one (smoked), I'll do a better job of this.

How does it work????

I couldn't get out of the windstream at all with the stock w/s - not even in a crouch. This w/s is a vast improvment over the stock screen. Greatly reduces head buffet and general riding fatigue. My riding is more "touring" and a little less "sport" so I'm looking more for comfort than speed (but still like to have my fun!!).

It is quite a bit thinner than the stock screen, but I haven't noticed any flexing at speed.

I would highly recommend this mod for anyone wanting to put a little more comfort in the mix of riding your VFR.

Keith

Thanks Keith! I read your review and decided to go with the same ws. I have had ZG double bubbles on my Hayabusa's in the past and they were great. This time around I to wanted something with more wind protection. Thanks again for the review!

Thanks for your comments Dave,

I have some miles with the w/s now (along with the Helibars), and really like the combination! Let us know how it works out for you.

Keith - I also have the ZG ST WS and notice it has made a lot of difference. Heli bars are arriving tomorrow so guess what my husband gets to do this weekend You mention you like the combination of the windshield and helibars.....can you tell me what difference you have noticed? Jean

Sure Jean,

I had the w/s on first (without the bars). With just the wind shield change, I noticed my head not getting tossed around as much as with the stock screen. I'm 6', so it wasn't very easy for me to get relief from the stock w/s. The ZG sport touring screen significantly reduced the impact of the good 'ol Kansas wind,, and with my height, I can still get my head up in the airflow if I want.

The Helibars completely changed the way I feel on the bike! Much more comfortable and confident. One of the most noticable (and unexpected) benefits I noticed was under braking - much less stress on hands and arms while braking. See my gen 6 helibar install thread for more details. Both of these mods together made the bike very close to perfect for my style of riding.

Good luck on yours, and let us know how the combo works for you (love to see some pictures of your finished product!).

Keith

Was yours the thread with all the photos? If so, I looked at it yesterday, so I'll know what to show my husband should he need it in the event of swearing episodes. I just plan to stay outta his way. Thanks for letting me know of the difference you noticed in the braking. Have you noticed any difference when making low speed / tight turns? Take care, Jean

Yea, that's my thread - information overload maybe....

As far as low speed / tight turns, with the way I adjusted the bars, the spacing of the bar at lock is near the same as the stock bars. Just with the increased comfort with the riding position in general, I'm probably more confident in that scenario - but I didn't necessarily have a problem with that to begin with, so hard to tell.

I bet you'll really like them!

How is the fit and construction compared to the stock one? I bought a no-name one off ebay and was not pleased with it at all; fortunately i was able to return it.

And yes, i learned my lesson...

Rev I have the Zero Gravity Sport Touring screen as well (and the Helibars), and I agree with Keith. The screen is a bit thinner, but I haven't noticed any flexing either, and I've put a good 4000 miles on mine.

Well, it is quite a bit thinner that the stock one. I had to work with it a bit to get both sides started into the slots correctly. Once on, it fit good, but not like the factory - after all, "factory" is factory. I've heard mixed opinions on the fit, but mine is ok - just wish it was a bit thicker.

Function wise, I really like the added wind protection. I kept my stock w/s just in case I want to put it back on someday, but for now, I'm very happy with the ZG S/T.

I have been considering getting a different w/s but was not sure what one to go with. after reading what you have posted I may do the same. By the way about how much did it run you with shipping?

I ordered mine through the Honda dealership - when I bought the VFR, they gave me 20% off all accessories for a period of time. Normally $99, paid $79 - no shipping but paid sales tax.

I just bought and installed a ZG ST windshield. I went the cheap route, and got one from their Factory Seconds site. $50.00 shipping included. The only blemish is a pin head size dimple that can only be seen if you look for it up close. Well worth saving the $$ IMO.

I too bought the factory seconds off of fleabay and am very happy with them, I couldnt even find any blemishes. Perfect fit. I noticed very little difference between the ST and DB. I'm 5'11" and have stock bars.
