Shutting down a hot engine

I have an '06 that I am just getting acquainted with. After just tooling around my home the operating temp stays between 200 and 220. Do you folks let the engine idle a while to let the temp drop a bit or do you just shut it down?

At those temps you have nothing to worry about. Shut it down at will.

Shut it down. It will only get hotter at idle, unless you've been running the pi$$ out of it.

Gunzer - if the fan is on, then I will turn off the motor, but leave the ignition on so that the fan can run until it cools the engine down enough until it turns off. If the fan isn't on when you stop the engine, then you don't need to worry about it.

shut it down. I had it up to 252 and I did not wait around for it to come down, I shut it off at the first opportunity.

Thanks for the replys.

He Stew, any concern for draining the battery if you decide to let the fan run till it stops?

I am under the impression motorcycle batteries don't need an excuse to die early. Thoughts?

Also, the load of the fan is one of the heavier loads for the whole system.
If you are gonna let it sit for a while, just let it cool down naturally.

I've never had a problem doing this on any of my bikes. Typically, the fan never runs for more than 30 - 60 seconds after killing the engine, so it is not a prolonged period of time. It probably isn't necessary, but I prefer to get the motor back into normal temperature range (pre-fan) before letting it sit.

I let my fan run for the 30 sec or so like stewartj239 does and I don't think it hurts anything. It just makes me feel better getting some of that heat out.

Howdy Guys; I believe its best to just shut it off, if they all have the same chacteristics
as my Y2K, it will only get hotter if you let it sit and idle. As far as letting
the fan run after shutting off the engine, all you are doing is cooling
the fluid in the radiator,you are not cooling the engines temperature
at all. eddie

Roger on that one. My temp went way up into the RED zone the other day (fan was not running - don't get it). I stopped, turned the ignition off then on again and the fan came on. Temp did not go down until I restarted the engine.

In this case, I did let the fan cool the radiator only for a while, and when the water pump started circulating the fluid, the temp dropped by 35-40 degrees almost instantly.
