    Hi,
is anyone handy with electrics. My vfr (1997 750fv model) seems to drain a new battery almost overnight, and there's no alarm or aftermarket items fitted.
It seemed to just happen one day, but previously never showed any signs of anything wrong or breaking down.It doesn't blow fuses either. All electrics work fine.
I've tried the Amp meter inline from the battery, and pulled the fuses.
It only stops showing a drain when you pull the starter relay fuse(30A), but i'm not entirely sure i had it on the correct amp reading, as i'm pretty new to this kind of thing.
Charge rate actually drops as the engine revs rise, and i know it should rise.
    Has any-one had this before?
    Any suggestions?

you need to check the stator according to factory shop manual proceedures in order to eliminate it from suspicion.....after that, you can look for burned/melted wires where the 3 yellow wires from stator plug into v.r. or melting at plug connection to main fuse/solenoid unit.

if stator is ok and no bad connections are observed.....
    ....
CONGradulations!! YOU are the lastest victim of "Shindingen syndrome" and need to replace your failed voltage regulator, a VERY common situation.

NO one on this site is considered a veteran until after they have replaced their regulator for the SECOND time!!

Yes, the diodes in the rectifier section of the RR can short, and when they do, it'll drain the battery quickly. I'm no veteran, as my RR didn't fail before I replaced it with a GSXR unit. Better safe than sorry!

Your regulator/ rectifier is toast guaranteed!

Replace the RR, get a new battery, and as squrrleman said, check the stator too. Its easly to test. You may not have to replace the stator.

    Hi Squirrelman
I think it's the r/r after doing tests as per Haynes, but i'm not sure if i used the right ohms scale on the multimeter to test the r/r unit. Can you tell me how to do this?

    Actually i can't, sorry, mate.

i only test r/r by measuring its output at battery terminals AFTER testing the stator first and determining that stator is working OK.

if stator is OK, process of elimination says r/r is bad.

how long have you owned this bike??

    Since new.
I purchased her ( Bertha, as my other half has nick-named her), in August 1997. I' ve never had any problems at all, apart from finding enough spare time to ride her.
    Thanks anyway.
I,ll catch up next year, if not tomorrow, and wish you a Happy New Year,
And that goes to all at VFR World.

    Happy New Year
    Fred

some riders have had good luck installing small computer fans on r/r to aid cooling.
new replacement r/r from Honda is upgraded, but no guarantee as to increased longevity!

If you're trying to test the diodes, use the RX1 scale, or better yet, the diode check mode if your meter has it. A good diode will measure continuity in one direction, but when you reverse the leads will read open. A bad diode will read the same either way (could be open or shorted).
