I had been thinking of upgrading the exhaust on my 06 vfr for some time. I have settled on bos gp1 but seem to be unable to find a dealer that has them in stock. I got impatient so I decided for the moment to gut the exhaust. The idea was taken from a member from the other vfr forum, his instructions were simple to follow and the only tools he used were drill, hole saw and dremel. If you want step by step I can post it otherwise refer to the thread in vfrd.

I also installed a fender eliminator purchased from kanadian ken (vfrd member), replaced stock grips with gel pro grips #699, shock tank pad and I also bought axio tank bag.

    Gutted exhaust

Does your method of gutting the exhaust cause the trim plate on the end of the muffler to get extra hot, since the pipes are gone to direct the exhaust past the trim plate?

This mod takes allot longer than you would think. The main problem that I had was that the dremel cutoff discs are larger than the pipe so you must grind them down until they fit inside and you better have a whole lot of them probably took about 30 +/-. But it does sound a whole lot better than stock.

I did this mod today. Took me 5 hours!! Went threw 3 hole saws because of the welds, and as for the dremel discs......I gave up and decided to break out the air die grinder with a small spiral bit on it. It was alot easier, and the end result was great. The thing sounds like my 98 ducati 916 now! I love it, but its a bit louder than I expected it to be. Worth the time though

actually did nearly the exact same mod, but left the pipes on the bike. Pretty happy with the result. It's way better than stock, and no perceptable loss of power. only difference is that the steel tubes remain coming out through the chrome cap. the inner tube is removed and cut approx. 2-3 inches into the can. I could stand a hair louder, but for the money, very pleased.

actually i did use the dremel, and you are correct, the standard and heavy 'heavy duty' discs just don't work, and you will go through dozens.
I had very good success when I bought the fiber reinforced discs, and with metel shears, i trimmed them off (don't worry how neat) and got them down to just under 1 inch. then I spun them on a stone or old file to round them down to the final cutting edge. slipped them into the pipe to a marked debth on the dremel or flex tool, and went around the clock, cutting at 12,3,6 and 9. easy, and i only burned through about 1-2 discs per pipe. less as my learning curve went up....

i burned through one hole saw, i used plenty of cutting oil however, and shop vacc'd the shavings out every few seconds of cutting. I also prepped my saw teath with a dremel 'grinding wheel' and removed any jagged snaggle teeth, both inside and outside, to give me a smoother cut. I didn't remove the offset of the teeth, but you will note that some hang out more then others, and will hang up and drag on you as you cut, a huge PIA. once shaped and cleaned up, very smooth cutting.

Just did this mod after deciding $300 isn't worth spending on an 02 that I drive through michigan winter's when able.
I didn't even attemp cutting wheels, I used the hole earthen used a ball tip on the end of a die grinder.
I also popped a few holes in the pipe into the next chamber.

Sound is great. Not amazing, but definitely a step up from stock.

A side note if your bike is an all weather bike Nd your bolts on the exhaust clamp are rusted, listen both equally at a time. Otherwise it will bind and bend up on the other side and start to break.
